I've seen mention of various people using laptops onstage and to program with. So, I'm curious as to what the general consensus is in favor of, Mac or PC? Which is a better investment for this kinda stuff? And are you using laptops just for the portability? Or do you find them to be just as convenient as Desktop computers for programming. Thanks, -matT p.s. - sorry if this post seems a little off-topic, but I've seen techie questions occasionally here before. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Macs are good, I have a g4. pcs are good, my friend is running a pc system using cubase and an emu 6400 with a controlling keyboard and external mixer, he loves it. But keep an eye out for the new dual processor g4s that are about to ship, that will but all else in the out field. lets face you are going to do more than make music with a machine, video, new media what ever, and the newer g4 can handle processing a ton of apps in real time. Some co-workers just came back from the mac world expo and got a sneak peek at os 10, you can actually turn the extra processor on or off via the os. The pc is cheap granted, but its no compition for a dual processor g4 with os 10. You can also set up an entire recording studio via software only. unity ds-1 is a software sampelere and controller, use that with cubase and all the vst plug ins and you set. Why use laptops, when you can just bring a g4 out that does everything, a laptop has limited processor speeds and extremly limited ram capabilties- one of the reasons they crash when you are trying to do a live set that requires alot of ram. All in all its value vrs. quality. pc is more bang for the buck, but you are limited with a pc in terms of power. Remember the g4 is the worlds only desktop super computer. Not that it really matters, and the cost is dropping considerably. You can get a g4 with a 20 gig hd, internal zip, 400mgz dual processor for like 1600$ thats not alot of money maybe an additional 500$ over the cost of a pc. Just do alot of research, can you get priate software from friends or work? things like that may help you with your desion. All in all a a mac and a pc are both computers. -scott --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
