Electric Company is Brad Laner.... his work is really great if you're into distorted, heavily affected electronics. There are a few comparisons I could offer up, i.e. Phthalocyanine (the closest in sound), or maybe think the harsher side of Digital Hardcore, but less about an image or attitude and much more thoughtfully put together. Nothing is left untweaked, twisted, turned upside down.... breakbeats sputter around and turn into noise. You could dance to it, maybe... if you were suffering from some sort of seizure. ;-) Fans of Kid-606 would get a kick out of EC, and it's much less gabba influenced. The only album I personally own/have heard is "Studio City" which got a major release on Island Records a couple years ago. Also check out the Story of Personal Electronics release, this is an alias for EC, very bizarre and extreme stuff. Kudos for introducing a music-based thread on this list.... hope it helps matt p.s. Mr. Laner is lurking on this list, so maybe he can offer up what he feels would be a more appropriate summary of his catalogue.... without all the namedropping pretense ;-)

the first EC album is called Omakase on Vinyl Communications. Secondly came A Pert Cyclic Omen on some American Label subsidiary and is his album that I like the least, although I give him much credit for making the titles of all the songs on the albums anagrams of each other. Thirdly came Studio City, which is his best. I would say it's closest to the Pthalo or Lexaunculpt sound with a bit more of an edge with some very noisy bits as well. Rock on. Brian.

hmmm...no, I believe "a pert cyclic omen" was first. in fact this lp was done while medicine was still in effect (1994)...and I was gonna say that this CD (not available on vinyl, and now out of print on cd, I think), is absolutely essential. hauntingly beautiful & beautifully haunting. the title track sounds like a satanic bossanova party which took place in the boiler room (from the 1st nighmare on elm street). and a track called "electro amp cynic" sounds like it was recorded in some sort uf insanely fucked up jazz club which makes the cantina bar scene in star wars look (and sound) like your everyday cheesy top 40 cover band in the trendy bar down the street...uhhh...maybe I should keep my mental pictures to myself. anyway, lovely record. definitely one of my all time favorites. em.

There is something I find quite funny about thinking of an IDMer once releasing something on the soundtrack to 'The Crow'. It just seems so incongruous with all the assumptions and myths of IDM.
