You should run out to the nearest library and check out Duchamp: A Biography by Calvin Tompkins. It's a good read, even if Tompkins sounds a little snobby at times. You should know, though, that the "official version" of Duchamp's work is being disputed these days by Rhonda Roland Shearer (Stephen Jay Gould 's wife) of all people. Check out http://www.toutfait.com/ for her side of the story. I'm still not sure I buy all of her theories, but they make Duchamp's art seem much more interesting.
