For the most part I probably wouldn't. When I saw them
live a few years ago they played what seemed like a 20
minute version of "Second Bad Vilbel", and it totally
made you want to dance.
I don't know why, but it seems like more cerebral
(head) music doesn't work very well on dancefloors.
Even very danceable Detroit techno tunes don't work
well sometimes. People seem to prefer music that
doesn't make you think.

With regards to me, I prefer faster dance music. If it
had alot of energy I would be more likely to dance, if
it was slower like Boards Of Canada...I would probably
kick back and bob my head to the beat.

Bobbing isn't getting a dancefloor going.

Getting back to IDM mixing, if there was some sort of
flow, consistency in bpms and good mixing, then it
might work. But if people are playing stuff with
really random bpms and has no flow, and so so mixing
then it probably wouldn't work very well.
Obviously if djs like Coldcut were mixing it up then
it might work well.

Part of the reason I love drum n bass so much is
because it's "intelligent" if you want to put it that
way and floor friendly. I think alot of idm is rather
stagnant, there is still good stuff being made...but
very few things that blow me away.
Techno and house can be good, obviously the way it
get's mixed has alot to do with it.
Here's a quote I like ..."Photek taps into what makes
drum'n'bass so fertile a ground for innovation - the
drums. The reason why house's evolution has become
stunted is its reliance on the 4/4 beat, which means
the only fresh twists come from what you lay down over
the top."
Drum n bass feels alot fresher to me because there are
continually new sounds, breaks, and styles, etc. It's
continually evolving.
Alot of IDM on the other hand seems like it's trying
to cover old ground and try to mimic either Autechre
or Aphex Twin (and maybe Basic Channel/Chain
Reaction). I suppose that is fine, but I have been
waiting for some people to take it to the next level.
And I'm not saying there haven't been some fine
releases because I have found a decent amount of stuff
that i fancy. Just ALOT less then in the past.
While I like most of the styles of drum n bass (except
jump up which is pretty shite), I really like alot of
the jazzier tunes. Artists like Sci Clone, Use Of
Weapons, Photek, etc.
Listen to Photek's "KJZ" it was constructed using tiny
samples of jazz drum solos, and you're hearing the
spirit of an alternative, abstract, jazz tradition.
That's kind of why I liked Squarepusher - Music Is
Rotted One Note, because of it's experimental jazz
quality.
I guess jazzier stuff has interested me a little more
recently. I love Ian O'Brien, he does some great work.
Getting back to non-jazzy stuff, I also love music
that has alot of energy to it, but it has to be
interesting also. Take Dillinja for example, when one
of his tunes drop you know your in for some heavy
fierce bass and beats. Optical & Matrix both keep
pushing out really interesting releases. They both
grew up listening to old funk records. Even when they
do alot of harder techstep releases, you can hear some
funk in their rhythms. Check out Optical & Ryme Tyme's
new release on V Recordings under the name Jagged Edge
Too much rambling, better get back to work....
cheers
