So the new audio formats (DVD-Audio and Super CD Audio, see http://www.nytimes.com/library/tech/99/12/circuits/articles/09down.html for details) are filtering in, although I'm not sure how many titles are offered yet. These formats pack a lot more bits onto the disc, and supposedly offer much better quality. If the sound is as good as reported, should be cool. On the horizon, apparently, is multichannel (as opposed to just stereo) sound. So are software-based artists going to have to upgrade their programs to something that will produce sound at a better sampling rate? What about people wedded to Cubase on their Atari ST? Is anyone going to use multichannel sound effectively? Prediction: a brief spike in multichannel psychedelia soon after the new format(s) become common, until the stoners get bored with panning... i dont think the multichannel thing is going to be as big of a deal. there are already ways to do quad surround with psycho-acoustics. try the panhandler directx plugin for a good example. some of the early electronic artists used to experiment with quad speaker setups and just got tired of it. most software already supports the increased bit depth/sampling rate, if your hardware does, and it's not too hard to find a 24 bit 96khz adc/dac setup these days (www.midiman.net for the delta 1010, www.gadgetlabs.com for the wavepro). samplitude (www.sekd.com) already has dolby 5.1 mixing built in to the new version (5.31). but the question about old st setups is interesting....somehow i doubt there is anything you can do there, but then again is all this really necessary. you could resample a 16/44.1 mix into 24/96 without much problem as long as you interpolate the samples i would think. in many people's opinion, the specs now are adequate and you just have to wonder how long people will still be putting out good music on cds look at all the people still using multi-track tape recorders for demos, etc. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lukas Bergstrom" <lbergstr@fas.harvard.edu> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Wednesday, December 15, 1999 1:30 PM Subject: (idm) new audio formats

It's still t.b.a. And the list of remixers has changed a little according to the Unitary PR website (http://www.unitarypr.freeserve.co.uk/). Confirmed contributors are now Boards Of Canada, Four Tet, Pole, Horse Opera, Capitol K, mu-Ziq and Tusken Raiders. Mixes are expected from Mogwai, Coil (woo hoo!) and Dave Tipper. Jega is now confirmed to NOT be involved, but no mention is made of Mark Bell or MDK. autechre and plaid as similar alternatives? the only way these two are similar is in popularity. is this perhaps what the above is trying to say, that Mils is the kind of music that will sell as much as plaid and autechre? eric --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Funny you should mention this release because i picked it up this afternoon without knowing anything about it after hearing it played in bent crayon. Anyway, it is indeed really good electronica but i hear no autechre or plaid in it at all. Instead it sounds like a mix of mouse on mars, matmos and remote viewer. I've only given it a few listens so already consider it a worthwhile purchase. The guy at bent crayon said he didnt know anything about the release either but brought some into his store because jan st werner had mentioned that it was one of his favorites of 99. Here is the info on the release. .
