Hi, If people do reckon it's the time of year for this, can I request one thing (not on any authority, of course :) ? Please oh please say what you liked about the releases. I generally don't like the things that end up polling highly, so I'm interested to hear something of what people like about things, to help me make up my own mind on whether to check it out. I second that. When we had that "what's in your piles" thread - EVERY single one of those messages I deleted immediately. They had, like, ZERO redeeming value. So since it *IS* the end of the year and the top-10 lists are on the way... I'd much rather read ABOUT the releases than just look at their titles. Not to heckle you or anything, I have to disagree. It was totally revealing in a voyeuristic eye-opening way to see the wide-spread range of interests displayed by various list members. No need to describe every release at length : just to have them nearby indicates a willingness to spread your interests to a wider base. Nothing wrong with that!

Yes - I enjoy that too. But it can get long winded; the lists just threw together current 'listen-to' titles. I loved it. After a certain point, I kind of became dismayed with the musical beaver shots, as they didn't seem to be providing much in the way of surprise. I mean, a lot of people seem to live on IDM alone, so I felt like a total gimp because I didn't seem to have much of any on my desk at the time. 1. Cut Chemist & DJ Shadow -- Brainfreeze: If you can find this limited release, get it! It features Cut and Shadow mixing up a whole lotta PRIMO rare groove on the night before their Future Primative show. Worth the purchase if only for the rework of Shadow's "Number Song" with Kraftwerk's "Numbers". 2. Bonnie Prince Billy -- I See A Darkness: Will Oldham (The Artist Formerly Known As 'Palace') is certainly one of the greatest lyricists of our decade. This album, featuring Oldham's signature brand of dark country music, is beautiful beyond words. 3. Various Artists -- Quannum Spectrum A hip-hop compilation featuring the production wizardry of Dj Shadow, and the lyrical mayhem of Latyrx, Blackalicious, Jurassic 5, Divine Styler, and several other key figures in the underground hip-hop scene. Veeeerrry nice. 4. Autechre -- EP7 Come on guys, it wasn't THAT bad. The only track I don't really like is the second (the one with the MC). 5. Boards of Canada -- High Scores I know its a re-release, but, DAMN, this shit is good! "Everything You Do Is a Balloon" is the JAM! 6. Plone -- For Beginner Piano Wonderfully melodic tunes from these guys. Not even the staunchest Oval fan could resist its powers. 7. Aphex Twin -- Windowlicker Richard continues to show is why he is the master and we are all merely his students. How could you not be awestruck by the programming on "Nannou"? 8. DJ Z-Trip & Radar -- Live At the Future Primative Soundsession Arizona Turntablists Z-Trip & Radar mix some classic (and some not-so-classic) hip-hop with classic rock, and the result is nothing short of remarkable. This is the LORD of all party albums. 9. Red Snapper -- Making Bones The refreshing album from this live Jazz / Drum 'n' Bass band is a killer. This album really comes at you from all directions: A badass MC, a sulty diva, and some of the hottest drumming around. A true classic. 10. All the old shit I heard for the first time this year! I would have thought it would be the other way round. I was pleasantly surprised by this. Despite being WAY too short (taking notes from Bochum Welt?) it wasn't nearly as cheesy as I expected. Very light, playful, normal music. :)

Well, I'm only 19. I've went through several periods of listening to different types of music (Grunge Rock, Gangsta Rap, NIN, Marilyn Manson [I know, but it seemed okay at the time], Indie Rock, DC Hardcore, mainstream "Electronica" [Prodigy and the like], etc.), and I'm just now getting into IDM. I guarantee you that two years ago I couldn't have liked, let alone endured, SAW Vol II (but I did own, and like, the Richard D. James album back then), I just wasn't ready for ambient music. Good point. I watch the way my musical journey has ebbed and flowed over the years and often things only 'sink in' or click way after they were released. Which is why I'm finding making my top 10 for '99 list so hard, because much of what I've been loving this year is not from this year. IDM: Funckarma: Part 1 and 2 (and probably 3) 12"s The only stuff in the Autechre/Funkstorung school that really mattered this year. Remarkably subtle, interesting sounds, off-tempo construction, the works. Basic Channel/deep house: SND: 12"s and CD Speaking of new developments in sound, here we have essential new developments from the hypnotic minimalist click and clack dojo. The accretion disk effect at full strength here.
