Hi Last night I saw Derrick May, Merrick Brown, and Tony Drake play sets at Velvet in Austin. I heard about the show only at the last minute - at the (quite boring) mp3.com sponsored tour of Tonic/Goo Good Dolls but in time enough to make it to Velvet. The first set was played by Merrick Brown, who I understand is an Austin DJ. Then there was a live performance by "Time and Space Live" - one of the guys played the guitar and the other one was on keyboards. All of this was quite enjoyable but the real action didn't start until Derrick May started his set at around 1a.m. Lots of people started dancing but then all speakers but one stopped functioning. Thankfully, the full sound returned after a few minutes and the crowd really got going. He was very good - I could identify only a few of the tracks he played - "I feel love" - Summer/Moroder, the Armand van Helden mix of Daft Punk's Homework, a vocal-less version of A Few Good Men's "Keep it up", and after having bought "Innovator" this morning, I think I recall him playing some of his own tracks also. Apart from the people dancing, there was a good sized crowd watching Derrick. Occasionally he would shake hands with the people around him. It was like visiting royalty. His set lasted until around 3.30a.m. at which point Tony Drake came on. I didn't recognize the tracks that he played but they reminded me of the music on Kenny Larkin's "Azimuth". I left around 4a.m. - I wonder if Aril Brikha, who was also listed on the program, played later. The other locations on the (also mp3.com sponsored) Time-Space tour will apparently have different DJs - Kevin Saunderson, Juan Atkins, Stacey Pullen, and Kenny Larkin. Its a shame though they won't all be playing in Austin. I liked the venue, Velvet. This was my first time there and it has a very nice patio. The general vibe at the event was quite relaxed and friendly. I think I'll go there again. yup. merrick is the label owner of Tektite (www.isolateral.com/tektite). tektite is the label that mille plateau liscensed the Stewart S. Walker "Stabiles" material from. incindentally, the "stabiles remixes" (forthcoming on tektite, TITE-06) is a real corker. a fresh track from SSW, a NICE reduced mix from Sutekh, a more dancefloor mix from Merrick, and a driving mix from Female.

The S. Walker Album is superb if your into minimalism. The music is really stripped down but it works very nicely. Beyond that, Tektite has some particularly strong releases in the techno arena. Incidentally, Tektite and Mad Monkey will be putting out a 12 inch together in the first part of next year (A side = Merrick Brown; B side = T. Millar). IDM content: don't know if this is new or not, but I picked up a 7 inch by lithops called "blasmusic.intendo". It is on robot records (based out of San Antonio Texas) and is limited to 495 copies. If your into lithops and their sonic manipulations (almost ambient in some places) this is a must have. Quite stunning. -daniel: Head Monkey: Mad Monkey Records: http://monkey.eliteware.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
