Hi, Skip. Early electro classics are things like Afrika Bambaataa's "Planet Rock", New Order's "Confusion", Cybotron's "Clear", Information Society's "Running", Newcleus' "Jam On It", Man Parrish's "Hip Hop Be Bop" things like that where the emphasis was funk, electronic as opposed to organic sounds, boom boom thwack (ie. *not* four on the floor boom boom boom boom a la house or techno), and above, all, fun, not serious music. It was inspired by the more uptempo hip hop (especially Mantronik), Kraftwerk ("Planet Rock" sampled Kraftwerk, as an example; Atkins made his first Cybotron material before hearing kraftwerk but then rethought his music after hearing them; numbers from kraftwerk is still a breakdancing fave). The electro of today in some ways pays tribute to the past masters like Cybotron, Kraftwerk, etc, but also is sometimes a bit darker, a bit more futuristic and robotic sounding, and the more uptempo stuff (stripped down music with more bass) is often akin to Miami Bass (2 live crew but without the dirty lyrics). Aux 88, for example, are inspired by Miami acts as much as Detroit compatriots. As Juan Atkins (who was half of Cybotron) told me in an interview last year: (i'm paraphrasing from memory here, by the way :)) "today's electro is similar to the original electro, it's just that today they have different, often better, technology". So today's electro has the spirit of the old electro. Autechre, to relate this to IDM, in their more uptempo (not drill and bass tempo, but more house/ techno tempo) funkier less busy moments could be said to be doing electro (and hip hop and electro are big inspirations that lead them to get started), like the cut "Rpeg" on EP7, if pitched up a bit on the turntable, works in an electro set. "Last Remembered thing" on Plaid's restproof clockwork has an electro feel. a few of the things in my idm/ect list, like the adult, japanese telecom, drexciya (one of my favorite bands :)) and a couple of others work in the idm and electro fields: it's not total idm and it's not total electro, it's sort of a fusion: so it's got the experimental aspect of IDM and the funky aspect of electro. material like suction releases, rephlex releases, some warp, things that aren't totally electro per se, but are funky idm that works in an electro set. hope this helps. thanks. andrew duke :) ps please forward this to the IDM list if you don't mind as others might want to read it (i didn't do so because you emailed me personally) :) Skip Acuff wrote:
