Yes, I'm listening to it right now actually. Very good.... most definitely a mix album which could be used as a casing point that the DJ is an artist. (!) 38 tracks in 60 minutes... lots of cutting back and forth, very hard-hitting techno throughout with a nice Rhythm & Sound track at the end, quirky use of an ancient Nitzer Ebb track, and he even uses my favorite Ifach track, Dead Eye. Just finished listening it for the first time (on the headphones) and the answer is... Yes! Excellent. Most of the time tracks flow very smoothly into the next one. Effects (flanger, EQ, delay, compressor) are used with good taste. Good selection of tracks, EXCEPT THAT NITZER EBB TRACK! I really could live without that part. Is this really a live mix without any edits? It must sound even much better on (big) monitors.

He's just being true to his roots. That track was huge in the Detroit area back when he was starting out as a DJ. It was a fave at the Music Institute, even. -d.w.

I may sound like a broken record, but the eclecticism fomented in Detroit during the mid to late 80s is what gave birth to techno. I like it whenever people drop things that refer back to that time, not so much for nostalgia reasons as to remind people that great music has been made for a long time, and that the art of a DJ is in the synthesis inherent in mixing records. Just last night I was able to drop a Marshall Jefferson remix of a Tom Tom Club track. That record is 11 years old, and it still rocks hard. There are LOADS of old tracks that sound fresh to me, even more so when placed in context with what's happening now. Knee jerk reactions to things like Nitzer Ebb just because they come out of an older tradition are ridiculous. They made loads of great tracks, and were in some ways way ahead of their time. I'm no fan of the industrial doom and gloom attitude in most of their stuff, but you only improve it by hoisting it out of that context.

Quite: I stuck "Mea Culpa" off My Life in the Bush of Ghosts into my set last week - this is approx. 20 years old and still sounds amazing. I *

Euro/EBM heavily informed the 80's techno scene. don't forget, mills was in "final cut" (WaxTrax!) along with people like chris conelley (sp). when i saw the +8 tour in dallas in 90 or 91 much of the audience was comprised of us crucial EBM kids. i imagine there was little or no irony in this in the minds of hawtin, larkin, etc. i mean, shit, MLK samples are for EVERYBODY :) to slag it is akin to slagging Warp for including all those naff chicago trax on the "influences" comp. . . -jeff p.s. yes, at base i'm just defending nitzer ebb. i suppose their music hasn't aged that well, but at the time i remember thinking it was the most insane shit i'd ever heard. . . -------------- 1642 try 621 --------------
