I'm finally reading old mail, so I don't know what sort of responses
you've gotten on this already...but I think it's probably most accurate
to say that IDM doesn't have a center, per se. I live here in SF and I
still feel like IDM is something elsewhere, outside. I think the beauty
of what IDM has done for music is this idea of the bedroom revolution.
This music doesn't have one, singular center because it's centered
wherever there are people making it...and that's usually in
un-air-conditioned, second-floor bedrooms, with a PC and some gear
sitting on a desk near the wall by the window (forgive the
generalization; I always think of one particular friend when I think of
people making music at home). There are few real IDM tours and little
dancing/party/rave-type vibes associated with this stuff the way that
Progressive House or Goa Trance is located in particular places where
gatherings of people occur. So I think it's a fallacy to even try to
talk of a 'center' in relation to IDM.
That said, the local record shop had about 25 copies of the BoC
rerelease and I'm never searching too long for new IDM stuffs in this
city. It's definitely more prevalent here than, say, Kansas City, and
when a tour happens, it DOES stop here. Maybe San Francisco is a hub,
then. Maybe it's all a bit more like the way the FAA deals with
airlines than how the music scene has traditionally dealt with 'scenes'.
