First of all, I just wanted to say pick up the Amon Tobin - Slowly 10", and the DJ Food - Kaleidoscope lp. All of those tunes have been in head for days. The Amon Tobin single makes me think of spaghetti westerns for some reason. The album is suppose to come out on the 16th isn't it. Nocturne off the Dj Food lp is the bomb! Anyway, has anyone heard anything about a 4 Hero remix of John Coltrane? Sounds like it could be really interesting. I also hear that 4 Hero was going to collaborate with Underground Resistance. Any news on that? ___________ KUCI 88.9Fm (Irvine, CA) is one of the nations most progressive music broadcasters, with programming that ranges from IDM, world, hip hop, jazz, and much more During KUCI's annual fund drive, held May 5-15 you can keep KUCI going strong through your tax deductible donation. Evil ! I'm sure it's really "jazzy". I bet it keeps looping the "A Love Supreme" chant over a 2-step beat. Andrei --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

What? 4 Hero have done some of the most innovative and forward-thinking drum and bass to date. Any nonbelievers should check the Jacob's Optical Stairway LP--this is one of the best jungle albums ever IMO, and nary a 2-step to be heard. There are brilliant tunes on Two Pages as well. I would guess that the Coltrane remix would be more along the lines of their jazzy, organic tracks, not the techy stuff. Just curious, what did you think of the Miles Davis remixes? Zach

That came out like 5 years ago. There was no 2-step back then. I mean I was making a gross generalization about the 2-step thing, but that's because everyone and I mean EVERYONE in d'n'b is doing 2-step now. I stopped paying attention to club oriented d'n'b 2 years ago so I could be wrong, but all the stuff I've heard since then has been 2-step.
quoted 1 line Just curious, what did you think of the Miles Davis remixes?> Just curious, what did you think of the Miles Davis remixes?
Never got to hear them, can't say I'm interested. Some music just doesn't need to be remixed. I don't see what there is to gain from remixing people like Coltrane or Miles. Coltrane's songs (especially) are meant to be listened to as long, continuous, developing pieces, so sampling a snippet of one of his solos or whatever and using it in a d'n'b tune seems pretty inconsequential. You might as well be sampling whatever else. It just becomes another "found sound" and pretty much loses significance. I don't think there's anything wrong with sampling any of these people, but "remixing" Coltrane... I did get to hear that that Laswell/Miles thing and that was OK I guess, but that was simply a mix really. Might as well listen to the original albums though. How can you say you stopped paying attention 2 years ago, then also make a generalization? The breaks are more interesting now than they've been since 94, IMHO. Check out the stuff coming from UFO and the Pneuma/Thermal/Green labels, even most of the UK stuff is mixing it up with different variations, bongo drums, ram, badco, spirit, dillinga...really most of the big producers are off of a straight 2-step sound. Now i wouldn't say there's anything completely revolutionary coming out of the core of drum+bass right now, but there's def some incredible sounding tracks... its definitely *not* dead as a genre. - cutups --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I have never heard Dillinja, LTJ Bukem, 4 Hero, Lemon D or Photek ever use a 2-step beats. And then there are producers like Dom & Roland that have both 2 step and amens throughout a tune. Check "Can't Punish Me" on Moving Shadow.

There is certainly alot of 2-step, but not everyone is doing it. It's funny that a lot of people that listen to 4/4 techno complain about 2-step.

How do you know 4 Hero is going to make it into a dnb track? They have done A LOT of downtempo tracks.

I never really care for Bill Laswell, I would rather hear Miles Davis. ___________ KUCI 88.9Fm (Irvine, CA) is one of the nation's most progressive music broadcasters, with programming that ranges from IDM, world, hip hop, jazz, and much more During KUCI's annual fund drive, held May 5-15 you can keep KUCI going strong through your tax deductible donation. Probably a generalization based on some emails about people complaining about 2-step beats.

I'm definitely excited about the stuff coming out. Especially, looking forward to more Digital & Spirit tracks.

True.

I think if you were to compare the progression of genres pushing boundaries... drum n bass would definitely be ahead of the pack. IDM and techno/house haven't exactly been churning anything "revolutionary".
