I was wondering if anyone could recommend some new releases that really stretch, warp & twist the boundaries of modern electronic music. Lots of new stuff I hear lately is interesting, different, but nothing that really makes you giggle hysterically, crying out 'what? where'd they get that idea? i didn't know they could do *that*!' or even just sit back and mouth the word 'wow'. I guess I'm just not listening to the right stuff! I admit i'm not a huge fan of gratuitous strangeness, i.e. it really serves no purpose, so the stuff that makes you go 'ooh' is more welcome! a few recommendations you may find interesting... nothing especially noisy or anything, just electronic music which goes further than what i'm used to: - funckarma _part 2_ 12" (djak-up bitch) sounds a bit like the autechre/funkstorung axis, but with obscure song structures which reveal themselves after a few listens. lovely & original. - mouse on mars _instrumentals_ 12" (sonig/thrill jockey) ambient-sounding melding of bleeps & bloops. the way the melodies blend in with the ambience is fantastic. ecstatic. _glam_ is also good but _instrumentals_ is the best. - pluxus _fas 2_ cd (slowball) i can't praise this one enough... rockin' beatbox action with the most infectious hooks i've heard in a while. blends in different genres of music in a very seamless way. inventive & enjoyable throughout. very, very sharp. - richard thomas _what my ears can see_ 7" (leaf) fantastic jazz-informed semi-ambient, semi-wacky noises. all over the place, yet focused. pretty much impossible to describe; the guy lives on his own planet. his previous releases are near impossible to find but they are supposedly just as brilliant. (perhaps more, by some accounts.) that's all i can remember for now... then again, i don't buy that many records... but these really stand out in my book as some of the more inventive & challenging idm i've heard recently. -- david
