If 'idm' is 'intelligent dance music' then by far the best example of this so far this year both live and on record for me has to be Orbital's 'Middle of Nowhere'. Went to the Leeds gig a while ago and am still buzzing off it now. I have seen them live many times now and they just keep on improving (apart from the disappointing Snivilisation - made me laugh when NME decided that was their best album to date - bit of politics and NME can't get enough of it!). To go one better with 'Middle of Nowhere' than 'In Sides' is quite an achievement. I might even try composing a review of it if I get the time. If you love experimental sounds but want the kind of emotionally involving and evolving music that you get from great classical music then this aint a bad place to start... Cheers, Jonny

The new Orbital is toss. If that's the "best of IDM of late", then it has sure gone down hill in a big way. The show may of been good, but the lp isn't --- Jonathan Tedds <jat@ast.leeds.ac.uk> wrote:

politics and NME can't get enough of it!). I have no trouble saying that _Snivilisation_ is their finest album. It certainly contains the widest variety in the tracks ... and seemed to balance pop with experimentation perfectly. Hummable tunes with bits of in-yer-face attitude. Which, to say the least, _In Sides_ was sorely lacking. _Middle of Nowhere_ is growing on me, but I can't see playing it as often as some of their other stuff. The tone of the album is a bit too cohesive and similar. And I liked their songs more when the lyrics were non-sensical (although Otono isn't all bad, just the damn words screw it up). J np: _Middle of Nowhere_ which I am sure will sound better live! "No rose without a thorn. Hahaha...touchy now aren't we :) I would think MOST people by now would REALIZE that once you put something on a mailing list, it's up for dispute or discussion. Make a little sense....doesn't it? Yes you stated your opinion and I stated mine, it's called a thread. If it bothers you for someone to share a different opinion, I would recommend you don't post. And I think you should be more secure about your opinions. It doesn't bother me in the slightest when someone slags something I like. With regard to "purpose", mine was just as valid as yours. You said it was great, I said it wasn't. Now for some IDM content. I have to give thumbs up to the new CIM on Delsin. It's a really nice single with about 8 tracks. I have an older single by him with Sean Deason on the Headspace label. Does anyone have any info on upcoming releases off Delsin? Yes the CiM ep is indeed excellent. I'm kind of surprised that the Delsin label hasnt gotten mentioned before. The Peel Seamus and Cellvoice records from 97-98 are all just as worthy of praise. Dutch abstract electronica at it's finest! Regarding the upcoming Delsin releases, the next scheduled release is by 154 who has previously recorded for the Eevolute, 100% Pure, and Lower East Side labels. I've not heard this new Delsin release yet but i do have the 154 releases on Eevolute and 100% Pure and both are excellent. So expect no less from this one! Delsin discography... . Peel Seamus: Publik Draft Cassette (Delsin - 1 dsr/psm 4) . Peel Seamus: Audience EP 12" (Delsin - 2 dsr/psm 2) . Cellvoice: One 12" (Delsin - 3 dsr/cvc 1) . Peel Seamus: Elusive Souls 12" (Delsin - 4 dsr/psm 3) . CiM Service Pack 12" (Delsin - 5 dsr/cim 1) . 154: Moon fm desire 12" (Delsin - 6 dsr/154 1) For more info and Real Audio snippetts of early releases, check the official Delsin site: http://www.sonik.demon.nl/delsin/ -->-Lance--- mclance@nacs.net lance@inaudible.com p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states
