just wondering what Philip Glass is to IDM. I picked up the Truman Show soundtrack and noticed he did a few compositions and also mnoticed his work with Aphex Twin on Donkey Rhubarb. Is he classical or something else?

I've thought of Philip Glass as being contemporary avent garde "classical," referring more to a style of music rather than a temporal classification. I never knew about his collaborations with IDM artists, but I can see the connection that could be made. Philip Glass produced a CD and Video called "Koyaniskatsi" (spelled that fone et ically because my friend borrowed it and never returned it.) Fucking scary experimental electronica released mid - 80's. The title means life out of balance. I used to own the video too, really tripped out live action / animation looped sequences. Reminded me of "The Wall" but much much weirder. I mean this was really strange, psychedelic stuff. I wish I still had it. By the way, that was an odd reference. Actually I always wanted to get into Philip Glass, but never got around to it. He's been a very big influence in Electronic / New Age / and orchestral (I think) music for over 20 years. He's done a shitload of work. "DancePieces" is supposed to be good. ----------Izzo...

In a previous life as an on-line editor, I came across a betacam copy (with no audio) of this in an edit bay I was working at. While waiting for a client, I popped it in, did a live mix with a copy of afx's selected ambient works vol 2 & a pair of CD players, running off 10 vhs dubs at the same time. The end result was something that worked a hell of a lot better then the Glass soundtrack and ended up being a christmas present for a bunch of my friend. Then a few years later, I found a copy of the soundtrack on vinyl and asked my roommate if he'd ever heard it. He said, 'sure, it's the music that's on that copy you brought home'. The whole time he thought the aphex twin was the original soundtrack... word to the mothership, brock
