Anyone else think Fennesz "Paint it Black" is complete genius? Like Oval with melody. I'm seeking a Fennesz discography and someone willing to part with Fennesz "Instrument" 12" (Mego)- /3'11

I agree. I really love all things Fennesz. I only have the Pain It Black 7", the Ill Labro 3" cd, and his cd on Mego but love it all. I also want that Instrument 12" and i believe he also has a record some german label called Symantic or something like that. Unfortunately i dont have that one either. I'll try to scrape together a legit Fennesz discog when i get home from work tonight. -->-Lance--- p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states

patti/brave new waves had a mego spotlight just last week which left me very happy indeed, she mentioned another project of fennesz, orchestra 33 and a third(i think its orchestra???) anyways, the track i heard was lacking in the usual mego lo-tech sound-structuring, it was more of a drum and bass jazz bit, really really good though, worth checking out, patti described their asthetic, something like, ' trying to work on the broader line of orchestrated drum n bass to free-jazz, without touching fusion or ......... something along those lines, worth checking out........ _will "nazi movement compressed into three minutes of film time." -the western lands the permutation diode - www.telusplanet.net/public/adroxy/

i thought it sounded like panasonic gone pop! this 7" is short, and sorta pricey for the amount of music.. but damn if the version of paint it black isnt the oddest and most beautiful thing i have heard in a while. now, the 'put your head on my shoulder' cover is good.. but i dont see the connection.. the version of paint it black is fairly obvious though. oh, if you like this style, the fennesz 3" cd that just came out is a MUST. chris.

his label is called moikai...he also reissued the lithops 12" uni umit as well as nuno caravano...both essential. check the fennesz discog i posted a few days ago...everything except for his first 12" is easy to find... also, did anyone else read the jim o'rourke invisible jukebox? is it just me or the only reason he got them all right is because they gave him the EASIEST fucking things...if they weren't his friends, they were influences...yeesh. nice article though... hope this helps... -joshua...

yes, or he played on it, or is going to release it (like "plays"). lot of good music in there, but you're right they should have called the article "big obvious jukebox w/ the cover off and all the record labels showing" this time 'round. -martin

This is the ages old faux-pas of the 'InvisibleJukeBox', play music that the artist (who you as the journalist LIKE and have chosen to 'TEST') will know/like/have good things to say about or play music that will utterly confound/anger/condescend to him/her? Depends on your life outlook, I 'spose. It's like they get Philip Glass in there and play him Steve Reich. A loaded circumstance, of course, but when was the last time you heard Glass actually talk about Reich? There's more politics involved than actually testing the interviewee's musical 'geek-ness' or some such rate-able trait. If they had played him, say, Aaliyah or The Mavericks or such, he would have most likely said (being Jim O'Rourke) 'Oh this is great, what is it'. And what fun is there in that? Being honest with yourself, you want to interviewee to either: 1) slam something completely, especially when it deserves it or is something that the interviewee has creative ties to (bad allegiances/colalborations/PC) or 2) praise Allah in said audio's presence, great when you A) haven't actually heard of the audio's creator and B) like the interviewee's taste (not necessarily his/her music). You can go on and on and on about this. Ultimately you realise, the entire thing (like everything else in the Wire) is a giant ad. the interviewee is plugging his recent accomplishments (discoveries, records, collaborations) (or the writer has loaded goals, Ben Watson's case for 'Jukeing' Derek Bailey; his forthcoming Bailey biog). Go figure. There's still nothing like the Wire towing the confines of commerciality & complete commercial abandon anywhere in the known universe. Fuckers- Våt. PS- I found it HIGHLY unlikely that Jim identified the Gunter & Duncan CD right off the bat. Needle in a galaxy of hay. Ferarri/Ray Russell maybe. ____________________ Reckankreuzungsklankewerkzeuge PO BOX 382864. Cambridge, MA 02238 http://www.tiac.net/users/sheket/index.html

at one point, Seven was dead-set on licensing Bisk's "Strange or Funny Ha-Ha" from Sub Rosa for a US/vinyl release. i guess that never happened. but it's no surprise to hear of some other joint venture between the Florida crew and Fujikawa-san. re: CF while the "Hotel Paral.lel" vs. "Plays" debate rages, no one has mentioned Fennesz' great "Ex Libro Mio" 3" yet. or his untitled contribution to the "Picknick Mit Hermann" CD on Rhiz - maybe my favorite single Fennesz piece - or his wicked DJ Pure remix on Sub/Version. or the fact that Jim O'Rourke's Moikai label will be reissuing the awesome "Instrument" 12" on CD - probably with extra material. or the Di-n mini-LP, a Fennesz-Harding-Rehberg performance that benefits immeasurably from his presence (as straight Pita tends to lack something that Fennesz has to offer in spades). a little pricey for a one-sided/21min track, but the quality of the pressing and chic matte sleeve justify the cost. something of a teaser for Touch's eagerly anticipated/long-delayed release of the Fenn-O-Berg CD... Fennesz fiends also NEED to hear the improvised duet between guitarist Noel Akchoté and Joel Ryan (computer) on the Parker/Akchoté/Casserley/Ryan - Live at "Les Instants Chavirés" CD on Leo. very possibly the greatest and most overlooked release of 1998. "Plays," schmays... the Akchoté/Ryan improv is DSP's finest moment. run, don't walk, as the man said... mr. e. now on: haunted house: up in flames (erstwhile) - devastating! roll over, Haino. enter Loren MazzaCane Connors, the Blue Fire.

Yeah, that one's really worth checking out if you're into more drum'n'bassy stuff. It sounds more like Third Eye Foundation or Christoph De Babalon's more droney material rather than Fennesz's usual work though.

That's very good news. One Fennesz project that I found pretty disappointing despite the promising cast of characters (Peter Brotzmann, etc.) is the Orchester 33 1/3 CD on Rhiz. You can really live without this one. Andrei

One Fennesz release that I was lucky enough to jump on was this, on the Charizma label outta Vienna: DAFFELDDECKER / KURZMAN / FENNESZ / O¹ROURKE / DRUMM / SIEWERT: Really beautiful live improvisations for Theremin, G3, Clarinet, bass and guitar. Features Jim O¹Rourke, Christian Fennesz, Christoph Kurzman and Kevin Drumm. Digital, quiet, sparse, sublime. The spirit of Fennesz hovers amongst these recordings. A new aesthetic shifts into gear. If your in the line for emotional buzz. Fragile and exquisite.... ...and now rare as one of the characters [Kurzman, I think], pressed this little beauty prior to getting consent from Fennesz/O'Rourke, etc... item pulled/deleted [indefinitely ??] never saw this one pop up in the FE catalog..... certainly not idm orientated, but wonderful improvised glitchery 'n tone stew p
