(This question should probably be in a FAQ somewhere, sorry) So I'm headed to England later this month. Can anyone recommend good record shops in London & Oxford? (or point me toward a web page, or...) I'd be looking for IDM, techno and trance, among others. Also, I previously mentioned the Shpongle track "...and the day turned to night" on this list, without a response. Let me repeat my recommendation to at least give it a listen -- it's some pretty amazing stuff. On Twisted records -- the Eclipse compilation and the Shpongle full-length (which I haven't been able to listen to yet). Ironically enough, Shpongle is Simon Posford, aka Hallucinogen. I'm not a fan of of his Hallucinogen material (or any psy-trance, really) but, wow... Lukas

Well, I forwarded your mail to my friend Jan, who's a big trance fan & DJ. In fact, Jan and I recently went to an outdoor beach rave (about a month ago) where not only Simon P/Hallucinogen, but also Slinky Wizard played live. Cape Town, SA is becoming the next Goa :-))

I spent quite a while chatting to Simon - his set began round about 5am as the sun came up ... very pretty morning sky and him in a bright fluffy orange hooded top. He DJ's exclusively off DAT which got me talking to him - played lots of his own stuff although I didn't recognise any of the tunes, since I'm not at all up on trance. Jan has the Shpongle CD and I listened to quite a lot of it last week at his place, but can't say I'd be desperate to own it myself. Some nice areas on it, but then it goes into 'typical trance mode' and loses me :-) Maybe my loss and I wouldn't be surprised if he makes me sit down and listen to it again when next I visit and it may get better the more I hear it. Coming to South Africa soon?? Simon Posforth is apparently still here and staying with the Vortex crew (event organisers). And last night another UK trance act - Sonic Bloom, I think? - were on at yet another beach rave. This is the warm season here, btw :-) And no, I didn't go. PS : read all the blurb on the Shpongle cover : it's certifiably MAD. (Reminiscent of Daevid Allen's pothead pixies and flying teapots of yore ... but gone the mushroom route.) I *

A friend has this. Availabe in domestic format in the us. One of the most produced albums I have heard in a long time. But in this case it is not a bad thing. The comp works well together and seems more like an album. Don't expect anything astonishing but if you just want to listen to something that sounds good then buy this. In other words this is equivalent to pop in the IDM world. -daniel

I asked this question a few weeks back. Just got back from London (I was in Oxford briefly, but I didn't see any decent record stores) about a week ago, and the advice I received was great: go to Berwick Street. Don't even bother with Tower Records (the only thing I got there was a Public Enemy CD on sale for 6 pounds). It's just off of Oxford street in London (get off the underground at Oxford Circus and walk a few blocks to the east, then turn south onto Berwick Street). There are TONS of great stores there...I was like a kid in a candy store. Some of the best include Select-a-disc, Reckless Records (lots of good used cds and vinyl), Sister Ray, and of course, Ambient Soho (the shop run by the Worm Interface guys). If you're into drum'n'bass, you should also check out the Black Market, which is on a smaller street just off of Berwick street. I hope this helps...Have fun! === chris wicks cwicks@rocketmail.com http://drthunder.ml.org/~cwicks _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? don't know if there's really a FAQ, but maybe we have new list members, so.... for record stores, prior to posting the ubiquitous question " i'll be going to {insert techno hotspot} soon, can anyone recommend good shoppes?", consider checking out the rotator locator at hyperreal.org/music/rotator/ it sure isn't perfect, but it does have over 400 shops globally listed. np: traktor2000 peeeeeece, -- Jeff Davis pHlow@earthlink.net fn:216.533.6303 fx:216.266.2310 text:2165336303@mobile.att.net pHlow.linx: home.earthlink.net/~phlow/ Bochum Welt: www.bochumwelt.com Rotator Locator: hyperreal.org/music/rotator/

also Rough Trade in Neals Yard,Covent Garden is good.I tend to try there before Berwick St. and as you are looking for Trance as well,Dragon Discs in Camden Town(just by the tube station)is supposed to be good(not my cup of tea though). Also in Camden is Rhythm Records which used to be really good but has been a little patchy of late.Still worth a visit. -drew
