I just read the Timbaland article in the new issue of The Wire. He claims every electronic influence *except* drum and bass. Hes a big Bjork fan apparently and even admits to having sampled her for his tracks. The fact that his engineer produced Gang of Four, Roxy Music and The Meters doesn't hurt his style either! Now if would only ditch those sad rappers and syrup singers. Company Flow and Foetus. Hows that for a combo? :-)

i think the new method man album came up on the list this week...i was just thinking that i'd really like to hear an instrumental version of his new single, which has a little 'ghostly' synth progression deep in the mix that i SWEAR i've heard before somewhere in my techno stuff. timbaland is definitely linked in here somehwhere. his beats are pretty ill, and have a great subtle dnb feel to them, though he denies being influenced by it. man, i would kill to hear busta rhymes and luke vibert work together. <<shiver>> who'd be your combo? -rob

Samplespotting Alert: I believe his production on the Aaliyah track that became a hit -- is that the one with the baby cries? -- samples none other than Perrey-Kingsley from the late '60s. He probably got it from the "Incredibly Strange Music, Vol. 1" compilation, unless perhaps it came directly from the source... .John. My Dream Lineup: Imagine Dr. Octagon Vs. the Ultramagnetic MC's! [da-dum-dum] But seriously, folks...how about EPMD and Fatboy Slim -- both turn obnoxious samples into moments of pure genius... Or the Pharcyde Vs. Wagon Christ -- both turn the word silly upside-down and make it into a complement. Or, better yet; forget Wu-Tang Vs. Funkstorung, Wu-Tang Vs. Panacea would be a soundclash for the ages...

Speaking of, there's a new compilation coming out with remixes of classics from the Jive catalog (?), including Tribe Called Quest Vs. Fatboy Slim, Stone Roses Vs. Rabbit in the Moon, and...wait for it, A Flock of Seagulls Vs. Jason Nevins (and I thought he couldn't sink any lower ;). .John.

Yeah, Rabbit in the Moon remixed somebody really unexpected recently, can't recall who (Rolling Stones?). As for the Stone Roses remix, there was also one done by Kelly Reverb that may end up on the official release that is absolutely storming, amazing bassline. If you like SDM.

The apocalypse is truly upon us. The early A Tribe Called Quest material is one of those things in life that's reliable. It's like wool socks. Seeing Fatboy Slim remixing this is a travesty. Sure, go on with your "it'll turn on new fans" argument all you like, but I am deeply and sincerely depressed by this news. Damn. Today is a sad day indeed. don't worry, the sad day was actually seven years ago when norman 'call me fat boy' cook remixed "i left my wallet in el segundo". things are not getting worse, its always been that way. today may be relatively ok. -martin np saw/oh my bag!
