Welcome to the official 1998 IDM Poll! Please read over the following before you vote. Voting is divided into two phases: nominations and final voting. Anyone who wishes to may vote in either phase - preferably both! In the nomination phase of voting, voters may vote for whatever they wish. Final voting will be limited in each category among the 5 most popular nominees from the first phase. Ballots in the nominations phase are due by 9:00 PM Pacific time on the 26th. I'll be posting a reminder or two. Rules on voting: Everything released in 1998 is eligible. If you vote for something released before this year, I'll ignore that vote; the rest of your ballot will still be counted, of course. Any full-length release with tracks all by a single artist under the same name is an album. Compilations are only eligible for the Compilation of the Year category. Please indicate your votes in the form "Artist: Title" where applicable (you may also give them as "Artist: Title (Label)"). Please give the artist name in full - don't write "RDJ" when you mean "Aphex Twin." Please don't put any quotation marks, apostrophes, underscores, or other punctuation around titles. They make sorting (and counting) the votes more difficult. Please give the title as it appears on the release, not a nickname or abbreviation. If no title is given, list it as Untitled. If you feel this may lead to confusion (i.e., the artist in question has released more than one untitled record this year), please also list the label and catalogue number parenthetically. Votes that do not use the official ballot will not be counted! The ballot for nominations follows. Just fill in the blanks, and send it to cspot@hyperreal.org (please make sure your message has "poll" in the subject line). ----------------------------------------------------------------Cut----- IDM Poll 1998 - Nomination Phase <IDM Album of the Year> (Three equal votes for '98 releases) 1)................... 2)................... 3)................... <IDM Single/EP of the Year> (Three equal votes for '98 releases) 1)................... 2)................... 3)................... <Compilation of the Year> (Vote for compilation released in '98) 1)................... <Chill Out Album of the Year> (Vote for album released in '98) 1)................... <Drum & Bass Album of the Year> (Vote for album released in '98) 1)................... <House or Techno Album of the Year> (Vote for album released in '98) 1)................... <IDM Label of the Year> (For consistent quality in '98) 1)................... <IDM Artist of the Year> (For consistent quality in '98) 1)................... ----------------------------------------------------------------Cut----- Send entries to cspot@hyperreal.org. Hi Chris, I might as well ask this publically... In my opinion 1998 was the year of the compilation. There were SO MANY amazing compilations, I think it's a great pity to only have one nomination allowed in this category - even three can't do justice to the stuff that was out there. So... I know it's a long shot, and too late, but anyway, can't we nominate three compilations? Here's a list of just a few fantastic ones for everybody out there to consider, of which it's very hard to decide between the first 5 listed at least: Blip, Bleep (Lucky Kitchen) Highways Over Gardens (Carpet Bomb) Endlessnessism (Dot) - YES it's 1998 even though on the CDs it says 1997 Funkungfusion (Ninja Tune) Diskono [x] and Diskono [y] (Diskono) I'm So Bored With the USA (Diskono) Underwood 3 (Sub Rosa) Deutscher Funk (Capirinha) WAP100 "We Are Reasonable People" (Warp) Avantgardism 2 (Law & Auder/ Blue Angel) State of the Nu-Art 2 (Blue Planet) Plus two great Australian compilations: The Freaky Loops comp, and Jaunt II. And on and on... You get the idea. Happy Channuka (just over...), and all other seasons' greetings to all, Peter. -- Peter Hollo raven@fourplay.com.au http://www.fourplay.com.au/me.html FourPlay - Eclectic Electric String Quartet http://www.fourplay.com.au "Of course, dance music can be a music where you lie on your back and your brain cells dance" -Michael Karoli of Can, quoted in Wire mag.

Yes it is an excellent comp but it came out in the Fall of '97 so it won't qualify for this year's poll. But Deutscher Funk vol 2 will be out in early 99 so that one will be eligible for next years poll. -->-Lance--- p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states

First mention of this title in the archives is 98/02/03. musicblvd.com and allmusic.com both list a release date of 98/01/13. C. -- Chris.Hilker (cspot@hyperreal.org)

Ahem. And a follow-up question: The AMAZING Attention: Cats compilation on Reckankreutzungsklankewerkzeuge says 1997 on the record, but I suspect only really came out in 1998 too. Can someone confirm this? Although it was copyrighted in September of 1997, it didn't see release until April of 1998. But that's besides the point as we're not very smart, and are thus exempt... I just want to remind you all that 'Sounds of the North American Frogs' was released in '98. I believe this one's valid for both compilation AND artist album of the year. If you want to know more about the 'N.A. Frogs for IDM Kings' campaign, please visit: http://www.smithsonianfolkways/nafrogs/yearendmarketingploys/idmpoll.html -Våt. PS - 'Signal to Noise' went very well despite the dubious location/medium turnout. Thanks to all of the listees who made it. ____________________ Reckankreuzungsklankewerkzeuge PO BOX 382864.
