Substrata is like the more ambient tracks on Patashnik. There don't seem to be any drum machines at all, although it's sometimes rhythmic enough that you can pick out a tempo in several tracks. Definitely not dance music, intelligent or otherwise. You can tell it's Biosphere -- same thick, dark yet warm production quality. I like about 50% of it a lot, 30% of it a little, and 1 or 2 tracks I could do without. I was lukewarm on the whole thing at first, but it grew on me. - Mike ______________________________________________________________________ Mike Brown / Hyperreal | Director, Hyperreal Music Archive PO Box 61334 | http://www.hyperreal.org/music/ Denver CO 80206-8334 USA |

Just to give another perspective, I f'n love Substrata. Drippy primal, organic ambient. No slick production techniques/oddball rhythm programming here. That one track with the string section and the drunk/old Russian dialogue gets me everytime. I've listened to this record at least once a week since I bought it last year... peace Nate On Mon, 26 Oct 1998 mike@hyperreal.org wrote:

Quoting Nate Harrison Toshok Laboratories" (nate@toshoklabs.com): | | Just to give another perspective, I f'n love Substrata.i | ... | That one track with the string section and the drunk/old Russian | dialogue gets me everytime. Actually it's a recording of a Russian telepath, trying to describe an object on a table two floors up from where he is. Geir sampled it from a TV-programme on the norwegian national television. :) -- Christian Stigen Larsen -- http://www.sublevel3.org chrisl@stud.ntnu.no http://www.stud.ntnu.no/~chrisl/
