Can somebody enlighten me as to the relationship between Grand Central, Fat City, and Rae & Christian? Specifically, are the first two indie trip/hip hop labels from Manchester? And where do Mark Rae and Steve Christian fit into this whole deal? Reason I ask is that I'm reviewing a copy of their new CD "Northern Sulphuric Soul" that just came out domestic (for US folks) on Smile (of all labels). Pleasantly surprised, trip/hop hop with firm roots in funk and soul, a lot more to it than some other formulaic 80 BPM head nodders I've heard as of late. Some of the cuts w/ vocals veer into diva/r&b territory (which I'd rather avoid) but the cuts featuring Jeru and Jungle Bros. are pretty dope. It's not earth-shattering, but has just the right touch of jazzy breakbeat action that folks into MoWax, Compost, etc. might dig. So there's a review along with my query, I suppose... ____________________________________ Brock Phillips - bphil@email.unc.edu WXYC 89.3 FM The New Science Experience Tune in every Sunday night 10-12 AM EST http://www.wxyc.org for live RA broadcast Promos, demos, etc. welcome for submission Email for postal address and details... fat city is a record shop first and foremost. started in affleck's palace on oldham street in the early 90s. now has it's own shop next to vinyl exchange, picadilly, and eastern bloc. specialises in hiphop, dnb, soul, jazz, vinyl etc. very good. has also started its own label (some re-licensed stuff and more?). also has a crew of djs - play several nights in manc. (counter culture fr'instance), and the popular 'off-centre' at london's 333 (i tink). grand central is a label set up by mark rae - a spin off of fat city a few years ago. put out the two 'central heating' compilations which are both very good - veba, tony d, rae & christian, votel (who now has own label, twisted nerve) etc., as well as an album by tony d ('pound for pound) ... rae and christian have been remixing for years now - odd mix of very cool hip hop stuff, also did blue boy's 'remember me', and then someone like 'texas'? apparently doing natalie imbruglia next (mmm, imagine 'doing' natalie .... ah sorry). odd decision. anyway, off the top of me head on a friday night, so 'scuse any errors .... cheers, dan. (who used to work in the office above grand central - hello tib street!) ---+ dan hill [state51] ---+ new reviews on motion [9.10.98]: < frank zappa | wagon christ | solvent | dumb type | :zoviet*france: | jan garberek > http://www.state51.co.uk/motion/ +---
