I've been tuned into this new release by Moorush & Nik Zavriev (aka Lazyfish) and am once again impressed by the quality of yet another Art-Tek (Russia) product. After listening to a series of Russian output last year including the "Artefacts" comp, Ambidextrous' (unreleased) "Errorism", Novel23's "Melodies of Childhood for Advanced Imagination" on Pitchcadet, and Eu's self-released "Eu_Soft", Lazyfish have managed to keep their digital experiments alive while veering into areas i wasn't expecting to hear. On the first half of this full-length, "Vortex", this Russian duo from Moscow create a sonic palette of digital sound manifesto's with funky electronic bits ranging for beat heavy instrumentals to jungle flavored extracts and straight IDM. If you were as excited as i was to hear more from Lazyfish from their teaser-track on "Artefacts", then you'll be pleasantly surprised with the direction they've taken. The distorto-beats, odd frequencies, wacky bass rhythms and obscure samples molds this album consistently over the first 13 tracks. The last three tunes, tagged as "Please-126" (might be an EP?) takes a step in different direction to produce a minimal techno vibe with dubby elements thread deep below its core. Quite nice, and totally unexpected. It's good to know that Lazyfish haven't limited themselves with the array of sounds the play with. I should also mention that track 11, "June, Moscow" is in a lush Detroit techno style as well.. so if i've confused you so far, my apologies. ; ) I can't say it enough, though.. the Russian electronics scene is very much active, and it's a thrill to hear the future sounds of Moscow on this side of the water. Art-Tek is yet another high-caliber electronic label that i've filed next to labels like Toshoklabs, Sprout, Emanate, Involve, Suction and City Centre Offices. "Vortex.Please-126" should be available soon via the usual suspects.. Skimo, Bent Crayon, Riouxs et cetera. Try to set volume at "max" position.. at your own risk.. Just wanted to clear a typo i made with the Lazyfish mini-review posted yesterday. Lazyfish is NOT Moorush & Nik Zavriev (they were the ones who did the mastering). Alexander Potehin is Lazyfish. Please excuse any confusion this may have caused.
