alt. frequencies 3 (Wi XV; Worm interface)
the track listing on the CD and the CD sleeve are incorrect.
fortunately, the guys at worm interface realized this, and slapped a
handy dandy sticker on the inside cover correcting this.
the CORRECT track running order is:
1.) jake mandell - untitled 27
2.) baraki - wa to yoni
3.) himuro - 9pm
4.) jake mandell - taut
5.) solar x - little pretty automatic
6.) gescom - leritue (gibber mix)
7.) rook valard - crowslish
8.) plasma lamp - 5 zeros
9.) plod - markkinal
11.) dunderhead - horsenfefer
12.) baraki - whisper 2
13.) freeform - thok
so, here's some brief descriptions (somewhat edited) taken directly from
the backside of the outer sleeve. i'll go into further detail after a
few more listens. out of the three alt. frequencies comps, this one is
definitely my favorite. (and a bargain at $16.99!!)
--------------------
*jake mandell - untitled 27 : electronica coming to you from the climes
of illinois, u.s.a.
*baraki - wa to yoni : shohei from japan has an album out on worm
interface this year. this drum'n'bass tune from it is in full effect.
*himuro - 9pm : another brilliant piece from yoshiteru. coming out of
japan with a bang - drum'n'bass from another planet.
*jake mandell - taut : more furious frequencies - electronica that gets
in your brain.
*solar x - little pretty automatic : sublime electronics by a young
pioneer from russia in the mould of aphex twin.
*gescom - leritue (gibber mix) : broken down, deconstructed and fixed
back up again electro beats from the nice guys booth and brown.
*freeform - mish : again freeform turns it in for alt. frequencies. his
last 12" palava lamp was 'like riding a bicycle across the clouds' - i/e
magazine u.s.a.
*rook valard - crowslish : chris from s.f. u.s.a. takes us in his time
travelling space beat machine to the outer limits of elecro-grunge.
*plasma lamp - 5 zeros : paul verna from ontario, canada returns with
some funky breakbleeps.
*plod - markkinal : dubby deep and lush, this is the sound of plod from
sweden.
*dunderhead - horsenfefer : nigel smith's new album, currently being
recorded is the dopest and has the wildest sounds around. expect soon.
*baraki - whisper 2 : again baraki is with us for another edition of
alt.frequencies. this is a dirty, full-on and blissed-out epic.
*freeform - thok : again all good clean fun involving a throbbing bass
line and rocking electronics.
-------------------
yeah, the descriptions are pretty lame (don't blame me...), but i
thought this would give at least some impression of what to expect on
this 3rd edition of alt. frequencies. the term drum'n'bass applies very
loosely to the described tracks. very tweaked, plenty of variation, and
nifty packaging as usual. the gescom track is fantastic (sample and
synth mutilation at it's best..), and 'thok' by freeform is a fine
example of quality idm. the plod track is another standout with slow
'chunky' breaks, and mutated 303 gurgles. (with just the right amount of
resonance and melody..) and just when you thought drum'n'bass has been
beaten to death, baraki provides you with a somewhat chaotic, ever
evolving track full of dark horn 'drones,' and synth tinkerings in the
'bleep blop' vein. jake mandell is a pleasant surprise, and dunderhead
continues to dabble in the more 'experimental' side of idm. love the
plasma lamp track.. more descriptions of the other artists to come...
listen and enjoy.
