Never heard of him before, but this has to be one of my favourite songs i've ever heard on Ninja Tune...ALWAYS gets my blood pumping! 2. Roots Manuva: i love this track...these guys have a full length i can buy, or one in the making? That's all for now...see ya!

Sakamoto was one of the founding members of the Yellow Magic Orchestra. If I'm not totally confused, he also scored the *excellent* soundtrack to the excellent movie "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence" with himself acting opposite David Bowie. Quite harrowing. He's also turned out some sickly poppy stuff - so listen before you buy. I *

RS is a seemingly omnipresent, that is to say, ubiquitous Japanese music guru. Releases orchestral, pop, and experimental works. Just about everyone seems to have worked with him - Bill Laswell, Adrian Belew, David Sylvian, all those Ninja cats on remixes, David Torn, Spooky, on and on. First claim to fame was via Yellow Magic Orchestra, Japanese answer to Kraftwerk. Sakamoto's output wanders over such diverse territory that I would expect just about anyone will find at least some of the music to their liking. 3

Ryuchi Sakamoto is one of the founding members of YMO. His style runs from neo-classical to techno to pop and several points in between. Geez...where do I start? This guy has a - what? - 20 + year career we're talking about here full of twists and turns. If you can find "Technodon" (is this a Japanese only release or did it simply never see US domesticity?) by YMO, consider yourself lucky. That may be the group's most this-listy thing. I'm kinda surprised this never gets mentioned as it's (imo) a lovely thing - prolly too poppy at points for the crowd here. "Technodelic" is also a good YMO staple, albeit a good 12 years older than "Technodon". You might be more familiar with Haruomi Hosono, who was also from YMO and whose output (sometimes, anyway) has more of a chance of being talked about in this neck-o-the-woods. As for what you heard on the Ninja thing, the remixers (Tobin and co.) have definitely left a vast impression on the outcome of Ryuchi's original product. jeff Ali Lalani wrote:

interestingly enough, i saw snake eyes (nicolas cage) last week, and while the title credits were passing by, i saw that the score was done by sakamoto. unfortunately, i got too wrapped up in the movie to really pay attention to the score as anything other than a tension builder, so i can't give any sort of review/opinion. anyone else know about this? thanks, alan! ***Ali: Your spelling of his first and last names is close, but a bit off. Think it's Ryuichi Sakamoto, but I'm not organized enough right now to find the correct spelling. Anyway, he's been around for a long time. Started off in a Japanese band called Yellow Magic Orchestra (who started off around the same time Kraftwerk did). YMO went on to be influential for a lot of people, but never got to be "stars" like Kraftwerk. Robert Hood sampled one of their tracks on his first Mplant release, and a lot of others have done the same. Since YMO, he's done soundtrack work (Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, Last Emperor...), nu-classical music, and electronic stuff as well. His and YMO's material is well worth investigating. Hope this helps.
