Hey all. I just went to see Pi at the New Directors/New Films series in NYC. I went to see it because I'm a big PWEI fan, and i heard that Clint Mansell was doing the music to the movie. I highly recommend it, not just for the music (which was really great), but also for the movie, some twisted horror comedy cronenburg tetsuo-body-hammer kinda thing, shot for $20,000 in New York. Basic plot summary: pill popping obsessive genius discovers the mathematical link that explains the stock market and everything else chaotic in nature. Then, some crazy men in suits chase him for financial reasons, and some Hasidic Jews chase him so that they can unravel the numerology of the Talmud. The whole thing is really trippy, and amazingly well-shot —— really highcontrast b+w. If you have any experience in NYC, like the XFiles, or if you have any interest in math/chaos theory at all, go see this movie. But the music is the reason I went, and it was really cool. I don't know whether Mansell wrote any of it himself — there was one noisey jungly theme song thing which he might have composed, plus one minimal bleepy track that kept on recurring. The rest of it was great too —autechre, banco de gaia, orbital... Sound effects were done by the guy who runs Foetus, and apparently he's good friends with Clint. If anybody has a tracklisting for the soundtrack, let me know, I forgot to write it down. i know the movie is opening at the Angelika in NY in a few weeks, dunno about nationwide release or video plans. Just thought I would delurk for a few Partially of IDM content: For those who have not seen the movie Pi, I suggest taking some time to give it a viewing. It is quite an amazing feat in movies. Filmed in high contrast black and white (sorta eraserheadish). . . and the plot is amazing (I will leave it as a pleasant surprise for those of you who have not seen it yet) and the soundtrack has some nice idm-ish music (I even noticed a lil Orbital and Autechre during the movie). I have seen it twice already this weekend and have currently scheduled in a third viewing this week :) Back to my lurking [Sn]

I know everyone keeps going on about this film. But is it on general release? Is it only available in America? Is there no chance of seeing it over here in the uk? -- Ben Coffer http://www.hybridgame.demon.co.uk/

The movie has different release dates for each major city. It's playing tonight in Phoenix, and I'm going. The website for the film is pretty informative. http://www.pithemovie.com Stephen -----Original Message----- From: idm-owner@hyperreal.org [mailto:idm-owner@hyperreal.org] On Behalf Of Ben Coffer Sent: Wednesday, August 12, 1998 9:29 AM To: idm@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (idm) Pi In message <199808100139.SAA26457@gull.prod.itd.earthlink.net>, Mar[Sn]i <tyranny4you@earthlink.net> writes

Pi is on dvd and vhs. there is some info at >www.pithemovie.com .... for those of you who missed the threads when >it was in the theatres, Pi is a pretty weird yet cool movie with an >idmish soundtrack. Ae is on there, among others.
The bulk of the soundtrack is pretty bad - its done by ex-PWEI Clint Mansell and its got some tired, weakly-used Amen breaks, some other more pulsing analogue stuff and kind of industrial atmospheric noises. The only bit that sticks in my mind is when they play Ae's _Kalpol_ which works quite well. FYI, theres an Aphex track listed on the soundtrack but it isn't actually in the movie. The film is okay but nothing special IMO. || [CiM] || cim_@hotmail.com || - ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

Its been out ages, but ive only just got it. The Pi soundtrack is really rather tasty: the big names (Autechre, Aphex, Banco De Gaia) don't disappoint, and Spacetime Continuum turn in a lovely 7 minutes of ominous rumbles and humms. Clint Mansels bits are a bit hackneyed (AMENable darkcore / scary industrial) but pretty effective. The best bit (my favourite) is David Holmes' No Mans Land; kind of like Weather Report's Unknown Soldier, with ominous humming, synthed Irish pipes, church bells, and military drumming. Subtext anyone? Anyroad, if you don't already own it, this might be a worthwhile investment Universal Love Jorkens -><- Never tell anyone anything. If you do, you start missing everybody
