this is how the ban works: warp says "we wont sell these direct to you" so all u.s. distributors are shut out going directly through warp as they usually do. they are then sent to other uk distributors who can be persuaded to ship stateside. warp turns a blind eye, and the result is a big batch of autechre records for the american market there is a ban, but it doesnt have any real teeth nothing are most likely unaware that any got in country at all i had heard that nothing was interested in "doing something for the indie shops". i guess that means bringing in import copies and selling direct to the mom and pop's. if nothing REALLY wanted to do something for the underground public they would have released the autechre album at the same time as the u.k. they need to have more consideration for the fan base that really cares and who put autechre on the map in the first place. i think they are just waiting to add a couple of tracks to the release and sell it as a 2 cd set i can bet you that if autechre were on astralwerks the ban would stick like it has on some titles in the past just some additional info for you in case you were interested -- pj>the exalted grand puba of mail order modern music 1018 north charles st, baltimore, md. 21201 fon: 410.625 9390 fax: 410.625 9359 http://www.modernmusic.com DO YOU GET OUR WEEKLY NEW RELEASE LIST? (note: if this has been postulated before, i apologize. been off the list for a few days) <paranoia fuelled> the conspiracy theory: Warp and Nothing impose this "import ban" in order to sell two copies of the same cd to Ae fans. that is, word is spread about this ban all over the idm list and elsewhere, cd's "leak through" to stateside distributors anyway, folks "in the know" snatch up copies (for approx $20 u.s.) as soon as possible because they heard it's hard to get here and that no stateside issue is forthcoming. then, unexpectedly (sooner or later), Nothing puts out their own version with a couple bonus tracks not available elsewhere and, well, rabid fans get to pay another $13 for the same cd with extra stuff. sigh. end result: $35 laid down for one album. rumours can sometimes be dangerous to the wallet. this "import ban" thing, regardless if it's fully based in fact, may just be a good advertising/p.r. job thought up by the "reasonable people" at warp n' nothing. </paranoia fuelled> certainly there have been plenty of instances where cd's eventually got repressed in the u.s. with extra tracks ("drum n' bass for papa" comes to mind), but they didn't involve any sort of ban zanyness. and this doesn't really involve the 2Xlp pressing, for i doubt that Nothing is going to press any vinyl. thoughts? audiopig

You expect us to believe that a RECORD COMPANY would do something so DIRTY AND UNDERHANDED? You know, I never really thougt about it, but that I'm now convinced that The Nefarious Greg Eden and other WARP executives are off in some dark office somewhere RIGHT NOW plotting which "bonus" tracks to put on the domestic release... Even though there's not going to be a domestic vinyl release, getting the import is the usual gamble with mail order vinyl, you have a pretty good chance of ending up with records more suitable for say, holding fruit, or one with a 4 labels glued into the grooves or something... at least that always happens to me. If you got screwed on the Plug record, think about what jazz fans go through (if you're also a jazz fan you already know where I'm going with this) the MOTHER%^$#ERS reissue the SAME RECORDS *over* and *over* and *over* except they'll remaster it, then add one track, then add 3 tracks, then put in some new photographs, then (finally) put out the "definitive box set" including tons of extra material... ask anyone who paid $37 EACH for the japanese imports of John Coltrane's "Live at the Village Vanguard" cds (it had been out of print in the US for years) how happy they are about the box set that came out last year (which had like an hour of extra material) Anyway, I'm paranoid now, so I'm gonna wait for the domestic release. .Bil. the way to do it. buy the import vinyl release. then look for the domestic on cd in the cutout bins/used cd shops for the cut rate price. _-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_ benny blanco /\ blancodisco: gamefx, inc. /\ /\ http://www.fcl-us.net/~benny/index.html -_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-

You are correct in the fact that there are no plans for a vinyl release of the autechre album domestically. from what i've heard, Nothing only plans to release the cd here in the states. -->-Lance--- p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states

which instances? all the warp stuff that has been issued domes. has had already available tracks (autechre-tri repetae++ and aphex twin + girl boy) admittedly, these are cheaper, but tend to be released much later and no one ever seems to be sure when its going to happen. japan seems to be the only place that gets tracks that are impossible to get elsewhere. i miss getting the ai series on wax trax! in a timely, cheap fashion. cl
