Speaking of skimpy vinyl, I've noticed that there seems to be a great rift between the companies that press quality vinyl, and those that press decent slabs. Dot presses on really nice, fat, heavy duty vinyl. Ninja tune presses on crappy thin vinyl. I always feel a little cheated when I pick up a skinny disc, like my stylus is going to cut right through it. At 4:51 PM -0400 7/9/98, Carter Tracy wrote:

There's actually 3 selections of vinyl that can be pressed: 1. heavy duty (thick) 2. normal (decent thickness) 3. thin (those records like the Ninja is holding in the Ninjatune logo) friend of mine told me this, he is pressing 100 7" vinyls. I am not absolutely 100% sure that those are the names of the actual pressing options, but they are like that.. "extra thick, normal width, thin as hell" type thing :D

I like the thin records personally.. they are much easier to spin, I mean heavy records are a fucking pain to beatmatch. but I do hate the variety of thin records where you could slit someone's throat with the edges, that actually go thinner to the edge, like a blade. these are just a pain to handle, because half the time you end up picking up the slipmat as well as the record. __ __\ \ / /_\ \ 1cQ<->uIN \_____/ 1.3777993 "..in whatever you do, if you can't break new ground, what's the point?" - James Cameron

it takes a hell of a lot more effort to scratch the record :DD it's like building muscles there ;)) .. but generally, you can't just move it back and forth as easily as you would.. and we all know the more pressure you put on something, the less stable and accurate your movements are, because there's resistance put on by the vinyl (it being heavier) of course I would hardly consider myself a master dj, or even a decent one, but, just I can't imagine how you could just scratch it back and forth as accurately, it being heavier.. when I've tried it always skips and I can't get the vinyl going at the right speed instantly, etc. it's the same thing, like when you buy a new sl-1200.. you can't use the slipmat that comes with it, coz it takes a muscleman to backcue with that thing :DD __ __\ \ / /_\ \ 1cQ<->uIN \_____/ 1.3777993 "..in whatever you do, if you can't break new ground, what's the point?" - James Cameron

It's heavier, so there's more friction and it's harder to move it around with your fingers. If you're backqueing the records you can sometimes even cause the platter to spin backwards. That's a pain. I'd still rather have heavy vinyl - I have too many skinny records that are warped! Has anyone ever experimented with slipmats that have some kind of serious lubrication on the back? bbn
