i just freaked myself out because i'm listening to tortoise's 'millions now living' and hit that point about 14 minutes into 'djed' where the track sounds like it's coming apart. great stuff, except it sounds uncannily like an old tape deck i had when it decided to chew up tapes. so just to make this an actual idm post, anyone got any funny stories bout mistaking sounds for stuff in life? i know the first few times i played the richard d. james album i was looking around to see if i had somehow turned on my modem. back to the usual, rob

the worst are the ones that sound like phones or doorbells. there's an old front242 record i've been listening to for around a decade now that still gets me on both counts... %) * #### a disturbance in a system. #### laerm. @voicenet.com #### we decide what's wrong or right, we'd rather lose than fight/we're going down/without us you don't get no kicks, without us you do not exist/we are going down

Yes, the Orb's "Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld". Had it cranked and I was in the other room. Suddenly, I thought a jet fighter plane was coming through the window. 3

Any time I sleep listening to music, particularly Biosphere, I think people are breaking into my apartment. One for the AppleSpotters: If you put on Stereolab's Dots&Loops album, I dont remember exactly- but about track 2 or 3, if you turn it up about 2.5 or 3.5 minutes into one of those tracks ( I want to say its Miss Modular), youll hear the very distict sound of "Windowshading" (the sound the Mac makes when you double-click a windows title-bar) mixed in with other noise. Throughout Dots and loops you can hear Launcher-button clicks a couple of times as well. Not knowing this coupled with being all alone in the house with an herbalized brain really had me freaking for a few minutes! I was in the next room and thought for sure someone had broken in and was hiding my windows! ernie Ernesto Ikerd, (817) 763-4795 Company Graphics, Dept 17 Lockheed Martin Tactical Aircaft Systems Fort Worth, Texas

There's this one theme we were mucking about with the start of that has a very VERY similar door bell sound. So when I listen to Echo Dek I have this double-confusion of thinking there's a door bell ringing somewhere, and thinking it's about to kick into the theme from 'WKRP in Cincinatti'. :-) Last night I was listening to the Autechre remix of Stereolab for the first time... there's this sort of bleeping sound that sounds a little like my flat's phone ringing in the background. Near the end of the track I was thinking "damn, there's that sound again - this could get annoying" when I realised it actually was the phone, and I'd just been letting it ring over and over. :-) Michael "You know what? While listening to Spacetime Continuum _Sea Biscuit_ me and a friend both thought that there was this big garbage truck backing up and moving forward repeatedly outside the window. The sound was like a slow droning that large diesel trucks make when in low gear. "Damn, that truck is getting annoying, I wonder what the hell he is doing out there!". I stood up to take a look out the window, but there was no truck... Also, listening to Woob (1), with headphones here at work... That song that starts out with the slamming door and the footsteps... I could have sworn somebody was about to jump on me. -/\= Hess M. Hodge ~/\ hess.hodge@colorado.edu (/\) <no homepage at this time>

This is a bit of a tangent, but here goes. About a year ago, some friends and I were trying to organize an idm appreciation club at the university of waterloo. There was already a strong techno club that organized trips to raves and had a minimal cd library, but we wanted something different which attracted experimental musicians and fans outside of the rave scene. We were trying to come up with slogans and ways describe and advertise what the club was all about. My favorite proposal was "If you feel like dancing when you hear a modem, you'll fit right in." :) Unfortunately the club flopped. -- * sheila.santos... .software.developer.. . ..*discreet.logic

I work in a large walk in freezer... play lots of idm stuff but it has a tendency to skip often because of moisture on the cd and the cd player lens... the above happens alot, and sometimes works very well. i've had certain aphex tunes skip for god knows how long before we realized as we were in and out of the freezer... funny though, one time, a few of my co-workers commented that i actually was playing something they actually liked (a very rare occassion indeed!)... started to pay attention to what was going on and low-and-behold, its skipping away! ^brap@sonic.net^ [icq: 12645306] http://www.sonic.net/~brap/ [blackdog][v/vm][jamesbernarddiscography]...etc etc etc sfwd.dyn.ml.org [occasional web.irc.ftp.etc]]] chris g. 1547 boston court #7, santa rosa, ca 95405

I was at Tower Records the other day, and a cd was skipping endlessly, and nobody noticed.
