hi, i am in the process of compiling mixes for a small birthday party i am having and i want to have one of the mixes convey feelings of intense emotional sadness or joy that could almost make you weep. very overwrought and melodramatic but in a good way. also very well produced. no genre definitions required. it can be pop, or idm or techno or even country (shudder) if it fits the bill in the emotions department. examples of the vibe i am looking for would be: portishead (a few things from 'dummy') old sinead o'connor julee cruise aphex (stuff from saw I) some seefeel 'moist moss' from locust's "weathered well" i have some things in mind but i thought people on the list(s) might have some insights into songs that make them feel this way. any reccomendations would be greatly appreciated. thanks a lot! derek... peace, love and ambience. d... d@techno.ca http://www.clo.com/~orbital

Very interesting question. Three things that immediately come to mind are: Autechre-Vletrmx21 (off of the "Garbage" e.p.) Goretski-Third Symphony (amazing ambient/classical music that recently rendered me full of tears - very emotional and overwhelming at times) SPK-Zamia Lehmanni (seminal industrial outfit, this album is an essential release and is not typically "industrial" or SPK sounding, for that matter. Dark, somber symphonic soundtrack type music <Graeme Revell is a genius>) I'm sure there are quite a few more, but my mind is blank. Good luck. -- Mr. Tangent "insert random quoted text here, for your reading pleasure"

its gorecki, and i could not agree more. the first 10 minutes or so is probably the most beautiful classical music i have ever heard. (although its not really classical, i think it was written in the early 70's about a polish ghetto during ww2) also check out everything you do is a balloon by boards of canada cl

Sorry for the misspelling, I've been online all day and the text is beginning to merge into itself, if you know what I mean.

You know what, I was going to say that! But I didn't want to list a thousand songs/albums, so I omitted it. Thank dog for the Skampler compilation. To add another one that's simply awe inspiring: Aphex Twin-Disk Two, Last Track (off "Selected Ambient Works Vol. II") Speaking of BoC, there are several vinyl only releases, correct? Does the recent CD "Music has a right to children" have all the vinyl tracks? I'm going to get it soon and was curious. Thanks! -- Mr. Tangent "insert random quoted text here, for your reading pleasure"

ahh, yes, good choice, too. but leave out the last 2.30. :) i made a tape for a friend, and that's the last track. he said he almost cried himself to sleep to it, then that part started and he burst out laughing... * #### a disturbance in a system. #### laerm. @voicenet.com #### one time and you're a philosopher; two times and you're a pervert.

coil's "chalice" (or would that be Black Light District?..) and i think wagon christ's "pull my strings" works on me, but that may be because we used it on a radio progam dedicated to a listener that killed himself. sad indeed. and while it doesn't make me weep, nurse with wound's "funderal music for perez prado" is a fairly moving track i think. -chris.

this bit confused me, until i realized that you must be talking about the last "track" (#13?) on the skampler, which is actually three songs...boc's "everything you do is a balloon" (about 6 min.), gescom "stoop" (about 6 min), and a silly jega track i can't remember the name of... unless for some reason you thought that the last couple minutes of the actual boc track was amusing for some reason??? np: main "ix" "a dream is worth a thousand pictures, the mouths of lampreys a thousand more..."

I can't believe no one's mentioned Tom Waits.... Here are a few choice Tom Waits break-down-and-cry songs (although not electronic by any stretch, much of his work is amazing lo-fi, analogue, beautiful, clangy music) Who Are You Now Dirt in the Ground Whistle down the wind Ruby's Arms Jersey Girl Time Cold cold ground Tom Traubert's Blues (Four sheets to the wind in Copenhagen) and about 15 other songs I can't name right now.... Tom Waits is AMAZING and the best lyricist I have ever heard, IMhO. Oh, here are some doleful electronic tracks as well: anything off woob 1194 latneiro by journeyman (aka woob) pulusha - isolationism argh, why can't I think of any others? hmmm... bits of aphex's "saw 2" autechre's "vletrmx21" "teartear" or "draun quarter" coil's "angelic conversation" (if you're into shakespeare's love sonnets...) locust "the love you cruelly gave me would not last", "the optimist", or "inside i am crying" if you're on a jazz tip... john coltrane for that matter... the cure's "faith" or "disintegration"? joy division's "atmosphere"? seems like a decent list, but i dunno whether much of it would really make me weep... np: main "x" "a dream is worth a thousand pictures, the mouths of lampreys a thousand more..."

And somebody mentioned Dead Can Dance: The beautiful Bertolt Brecht poem set to music "How Fortunate The Man With None" is quite exquisitely moving. how about DCD's *i am stretched at your grave* the cover of sinead o'connor's tune. kills me every time. of course, you gotta mention some blues. Otis Rush's *you don't love me no more* the 17 minute version would bring anyone to tears. and the 'his name is alive' tune that is my fave which is i believe from livonia called 'how ghosts affect relationships'., wow.

Sorry, but I must respectfully disagree with you. The absolute best lyricist, especially for sad songs, is none other than Lloyd Cole. You can't imagine unless you've actually heard his songs, both solo and with the Commotions. He's followed closely in the sad song category by Tori Amos and Bryan Ferry (solo), and some of James Taylor's stuff (ie-Fire and Rain). Let's see, IDMish? There's some great sad stuff (as well as shit scary) on SAW II. Recoil Pentamerous Metamorphosis - Chapterhouse remixed by Global Comm Placebo - Meat Beat Manifesto (listen to the whole song) Pentatonik Locust I can think of plenty of scary stuff, but not a lot of sad IDM/ambient. umm Alan Wilder *was* Depeche Mode, aside from lyrics/vocals and basic song structure or melodies he pretty much did everything....just look at the credits for "Ultra" I don't think anybody in DM now actually performs any music no wonder he left.Great album tho thanks to Tim Simeonson(sp?).....Alan Wilder is brilliant AND he's keeping Douglas Mccarthy employed! spaul

BoC's "see ya later" on SKAM is good, and the albums _heterarchy_ by freeform, _beauty nowhere_ by Scala, and _sounds of the satellites_ by Laika are all good in my book. +odd -- Todd Sines film * audio * design http://www.corefilm.com

Don't ask me why these trax get my emotions up... - Autechre: Err...Track 6 on one of the discs of tri-repitae. Dang, that's specific. Plus I think its #8 on Incunabula - Orbital: Oolaa, Walk On (Actually the longer remake on diversions...) - William Orbit: Montok Point - section where the guy talks about Lorraine. - Aphex Twin: #19, from the excursions in ambience comp, plus a huge number of trax from SAWII. - Sad world (Dunno the trax...off of 1+2) There is a much larger selection I could mention, but can't recall by name... Overall, one of the reasons I listen to this music is because it has the ability to generate an actual response within me, whether it's the urge to create or dream or sulk or whatever - It takes a lot more effort on the part of other sorts of music to have similar effects. "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attacked ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched sea beams glitter in the dark near the Tenhauser Gates. All those moments will be lost in time.... like.... tears.... in.... rain. Time to die." Yeah, that's a very, very sad and unforgettable moment. One of the best, and most emotive movies ever committed to film. Not to mention one of the most aesthetically awe inspiring ones. Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner, etc.) was one hell of a director at one time... hopefully he'll regain his old form soon? "G.I. Jane" just doesn't cut it. -- Mr. Tangent "insert random quoted text here, for your reading pleasure"

Ah shit...I forgot the song that's made me weep more than any other: Strings Of Life (Nude Mix) Really, I've shed tears on 3 or 4 occasions - it's that beautiful. Che Who has no reason to be listening to sad music.

"... just a small town girl, living in a lonley world, she took the midnight train going anywhere..." these are lyrics that move mountains. Hey, forget all the shit I mentioned on the top. JOURNEY RULES! Hey, Aphex Twin doesn't have a video game dedicated to him! and I don't have to pay $360 for a Journey record. I can pick up a used copy of Escape for $3! LOL t.S.o.G.

Your conscience/sense-of-aesthetics would let you do that? If so, then you mustn't forget "faithfully." ;) Moving right along, here are some other suggestions for the ultimate chick's-movie soundtrack. Cocteau Twins - again, pretty much anything, but especially the Love's Easy Tears EP, Blue Bell Knoll (esp. "a kissed out red floatboat") and the instrumental version of "Half-Gifts" (on Twinlights). Vangelis - "Five Circles" (from the Chariots of Fire soundtrack; also check out that twenty-minute final track simply titled "Chariots of Fire," esp. toward the end). R.H. Kirk - "Lagoon West" The Cure - "untitled" (the one at the end of Disintegration) Autechre's "vletrmx21" has already been mentioned at least twice already, but I'll mention it again, 'cause it evokes by far the most sadness (to me anyway) of any IDM work I've ever heard. ...and finally, Aphex Twin - "Milkman" a heartfelt story of broken promises and infinite longing (imagine this one popping up in the middle of a "sad" mix tape) "I would like some milk from the milkman's wife's tits" ... *sniff* gets ya right there doesn't it. I-I'm sorry, I *choke* I can't go on...

Here's a few that can occasionally inspire a tear in my eye. Odd too, when you think about them. Bjork--"Venus as a Boy," "You've Been Flirting Again (Flirt is a Promise Mix)" (they're melodic and sad) Coldcut--"Timber" (play it in the dark and listen carefully to those chord changes in the middle of the vocal sample) F.U.S.E.--"Uva" (dark and sweet) Kraftwerk--"Endless Endless" (okay, this one's kind of a joke) Jacob -- Crossfade: http://www.ithaca.edu/shp/shp99/jarnold1/ The IDM Ring: http://www.ithaca.edu/shp/shp99/jarnold1/idmring.html

three that always get me are Luke Vibert - Fluted (off of Throbbing Pouch) Funki Porcini - Purrfect (great chill track with haunting horns) and Global Goon - track b2 (not sure of the title) off his eponymous debut. actually, now that I think about it that whole global goon album would fit into that sort of sad genre... leif np: Funki Porcini - Purrfect

Speaking of Glocal Goon, I listenned to the new 2x12" lp of GG at a local record store and thought that, while some parts were absurd or inventive in a good way, there were just as many meandering melodies and sections. It was definitely going out on a limb in terms of some raw and melodic synth lines, which probably means it is pretty good and I should listen to it again. I notice that the really great records I get usually have some very challenging (read: annoying) things in them that I later praise highly. I guess I'd rather hear raw pathos synth songs than bland formulaic d-n-b remixes. Not exactly a review, eh? How about this then: the Boards of Canada 2xLP, while having nice textures and their brand of elements, struck me as a little samey when I jumped across the tracks. A functionally ambient record, that is, the music doesn't jump out at you the way, say, Come to Daddy does... or some challenging V/VM stuff. I picked this up cheap, as well as the I-F "Fucking Consumer" (guess that's me, huh?... well, Mr. I-F, thanks you FUCKING PRODUCER) I like this one quite a bit, maybe 2 tunes that didn't stand out much. I like the new wave discoid arpeggiations. Fun to mix with the old tunes, esp The Metro, by Berlin (Ha ha ha ....West German jab, there...*FUCKING PRODUCER*) Good record, cruel title. BTW, The I-F cd has 5 more tracks, I think 2 unreleased and 1 from the Viewlexx "Satellite" ep. BTW, did you know that people actually buy scratch-breaks-beats records on CD format? Wh....wh...why?! What do they do with them?? ;-) Salvadorinoid solenoid@europa.com <------+

Which reminds me... The Black Dog's "Kings of Sparta" and "The Crete, That Crete Made" from ToTB fit the bill nicely as well. Regards, John
