funkstorung - sonderdienste 12" [compost 045] :
housed in a designers republic sleeve you would be forgiven
for mistaking 'sonderdienste' for a warp release, this
misapprehension would be further confirmed on first spin of
the vinyl..yeah, uh-huh..autechre..wasn't the sound of skam
last years 'thing'? isn't the plurality of music what keeps it
exciting? but hold on there boy!!!..a quick re-scan of
the credits and further aural inspection reveals - da-daa!!.
that instead of the duo of sean and rob from manchester
we have..err the duo of michael and chris from munich also
know as funkstorung [german for interference BTW]..funkstorung
have never been ones to shy away from wearing their influences
on their sleeves [or even replicating them on vinyl], however
'sonderdienste' sees chris & michael stretching out, reaching
beyond the limited pallate of [now] cliche ridden skam-isms [BTW s
skam more than anyone else are aware of this - expect some
suprises;-) that were entrenched in the grooves of their
earlier musik aus strom output.
'sonderdienste' commands repeated listening, if not only for
it's buried subliminality [composition within composition] and
deft aural slights of hand..'In Mar Sat' combines lilting organ,
mono-tomic drones, popping and cracking staccato rhythms and
static drenched apollo-to-houston communications into a melancholic
drama reminiscent of ae's 'keynell' remix, 'telekom direct''s
time-signature switches and quirky pan- oriental leanings conjure
up the magik transendendance of spanners era black dog, 'bei
funkstorung' is underpinned by a sparse metallic hip hop beat
that spits at you from a safe distance, whilst clocks whirr,
doors slam, fuzzy textures shimmer..forming a delightful opium
haze..'mobilfunk' documents virtual skyscraper construction..
robotic rivet shots flange as they whirr through the air, a steinway
crashes down to the street from the top floor, whilst it's screams are
recorded for posterity..the lamers sign off would be..if yer into
skam or autechre then you'll like this, it's be nice to lamers day,
so i'll leave it at that
