what with all the discussion, once again, about "what speed should i play my records at" (and i don't really want to contribute to the debate, although i narrowly resist launching my own little polemic which runs like, "usually you can pretty well tell what speed it's supposed to be played at by the sound quality of the drums..."), i offer a little mini review of techno animal's "demonoid" ep. what's most striking to me about this is that it's an incredibly fucking *flexible* record. the label is marked at 33, and most of the tracks are, accordingly, deep, sludgy massively distored breaks-fests, like panacea-meets-hip-hop. some ugly, ugly breaks 'midst a whole mess of noise and squall. (it's worth noting that alec empire and porter ricks both assist on different tracks; and the porter ricks affair is a harsh, swirling grinder of a track) but i'm noticing that this thing is really amenable to tweaking. both tracks on the a-side become excellent tech-steppy numbers when pitched up to 45 -8% (or even just 33 +8%); and the B2 track (with the empire contribution) is just begging to be similarly re-pitched, bringing it in line with a slower cristophe de babalon feel. anyway. enough gushing. phil
