So, according to CMJ magazine CD review, the Darren Price cd called Under the Flightpath is apparently something to be reckoned with. Mr. Price having worked with/for the Underworld chaps has put out an album that is getting much praise. "Keeping melodic noodling on top to a minimum, he builds cuts up by stacking harmonic washes atop busy but uncluttered swarms of beats. Although the immediately discernable influence of house on Price's sound is nominal, he manages to generate tremendous warmth via strings fills and synthesizeer swells." I having heard it....any reviews???

Though I haven't heard the album, I would be suspicious of any CMJ reviews. They give great reviews for great albums, and great reviews for mediocre albums, and very positive reviews for terrible albums (you can usually spot the poor albums when they seem to work a bit too hard praising it). CMJ is at its best describing the sound of an artist, and they do a lot of good by exposing inward college-radio programmers to a lot of music they probably wouldn't hear, but they end up pushing every album that comes out... --------- John Bush.

I bought the Darren Price "Under The Flightpath" album in the UK a couple of months ago and was pretty disappointed with it - listened to it three times and then sold it. I was hoping for some more tracks like the ones on his "Blueprints" and "Attic" EPs - clean hard synth lines with relentless pumping rhythms driving everything along at a tidy pace. Instead it seems to me that these new tracks have all the hallmarks of what I would term as nondescript hard techno - to my ear the sounds are pretty much all the same, with very little sonic detail or flourishes to surprise and delight...for this type of music give me Luke Slater's Morganistic project any day. On a similar note, I wasn't exactly dazzled by Surgeon's debut album "BasicTonalVocabulary" - too fucking basic if you ask me - a couple of well written insistent tracks (especially "Waiting" ) made it worth the money, but on the whole it sounds as though Surgeon hasn't really developed his own sound yet, and he seems to have taken a leaf out of RDJ's book with a meagre 45 min of music on the CD. On a positive note, I would recommend to everyone who's into Panasonic/Autechre to check out the recent Bernd Friedmann album "Technischer Anhang". I got this last week and have had it on repeat play ever since :) It's a lot more musical than the "Leisure Zones" album, but still a far from conventional record...dispossed German voices drifting in and out, beautifully melancholy piano interludes, cheesy guitar loops warped and turned sinister...plus minimal sounds galore and two polished future noise tracks - one with a heavily distorted bass beat loop that has to be heard to be believed - if you liked the Sabres of Paradise crunchy remix of the CB's "Leaving Home" you'll love this (Track 12). I don't know whether the album is a ltd edition or a promo or what, but it didn't have any artwork or track listings - I'd appreciate any info on this album. James

While browsing through the ol' used bin at a record store today this CD popped out at me, because the edge looked much like autechre's Tri Repetae; that is, that same metallic green color. Anyway, it was called Under The Flightpath by Darren Price, and it was pretty okay, once I gave it a listen at the store's cd player. It's really listenable fast beats and deep sounding basses and stuff. ehh.. Hard to describe after only one listen. But anyways, what does anyone know about this guy? Is he cool? Uncool? What's the scoop? ;) I did do a web search before I posted this, but I now realize that I did the search for Darren Prince instead of Price. oops. Oh well, I'd rather hear it from y'all anyway. noah np: pwei cure for sanity

I've only heard one track (off of a sampler CD that came with a French Techno magazine) but it was excellent sweeping majestic Trance. I loved it. Wish I could find "Under The Flightpath" used. - Greg (Who apologizes for not discussing Mego or A-Musik or ... shoot me)

This is not enormously helpful ><><><>< but with their Oct/Nov issue of '97 JockeySlut gave away a free Novamute CD mixed by Darren Price, including a couple of tracks by himself too. Problem : the whole darn thing is ONE TRACK running time approx 65 mins of bumping cracking moving music (nothing 'ambient' about this lot!) - and although 18 separate tracks are credited (including NoMu artits ranging from Plastikman, Luke Slater, Speedy J, Joey Beltram, Mark Bell et al) unless you know the tracks and thus can tell them apart, it's pretty impossible to say what's what. About 30 mins. in, there's a _really_ pretty piece ....... :-) I'd say this is worth a back-order from your local news agent if you can arrange it. Darren Price has released : EP : "The Attic" (NOMU16) 16/10/95 Single : Lose No Time (NOMU33) 12/6/97 CD : Under The Flightpath (NOMU48) dated 16/6/97 Happy New Year to all from sweltering hot Cape Town. My "under the flightpath" cd had a sticker saying that he is the DJ from Underworld. I think it is a pretty good cd. Not discussed as much as it should be. I heard it first on Live 105 (standard commercial alternative rock station in SF) during their "subsonic" electronica show. -Mark

From what I understand, Darren Emerson is a *member* of Underworld, while Darren Price is their "official" DJ, i.e. he spins at most/all of their gigs. Somewhat confusing, I suppose - especially when you have rave promoters printing flyers with "UNDERWORLD" in huge letters followed by "DJ Darren Price" in tiny ones, which happened for a New Year's Eve party here in Toronto (the same flyer did the same thing with "THE ORB" and "DJ Alex Patterson"). Of course, when asked about it by an interviewer for a local entertainment rag, the promoter insisted that it was a printer's error and the font sizes were supposed to be the other way around. Suuuuuuuure they were... Greg
