X-103 works as a cohesive album, moving from almost pastoral synth-string
passages to distorted techno stompers that should make Alec Empire sweat.
The bulk of the record, though, is unusual, tweaky, Detroit/Berlin techno
that might well sound more fresh and modern than the current Tresor
output. All the more impressive that X-103 was Tresor 12 from 1993. The
whole record, as the title may suggest, has an "aquatic" sound. (From the
sonic evidence, mainly from analogue synths and an old sampler.) Although
the word "aquatic" may recall Drexciya, the X-103 disc demonstrates more
skill, and doesn't have the cheese factor (as endearing as that is in
Drexciya's music, and I don't mean to knock it).
By the way, X-101 was Tresor 1.
