Tell me about the music Jeff Mills has been doing lately! My current musical tastes have also evolved from an industrial/dance background. THE FINAL CUT made some really solid and unique industrial music, and I'd be very intersted in hearing what the members are doing now. There were two artists who I attribute with significantly changing the way I think about music, and one of them is Jack Dangers. Saying that he "jumped on the techno bandwagon" or whatever that shit was is totally ridiculous. I hear more Meat Beat Manifesto samples in ALL kinds of dance music than any other band. You may not like Jack's style, but there's no denying his influence. jen grof@chuma.cas.usf.edu

Thumping crunchy funky detroit techno is the answer. Serious hard grooves crafted out of metallic noises, stormin dancefloor material but imbued with subtlety. He also makes the occasional twisted beauty of a near-ambient track. Check out his recent "Live at the Liquid Room - Tokyo" CD for a considerable selection of his tracks, with others of a similar nature, all brought together by the man himself in an excellent example of the art of live mixing. High-Octane stuff! J ^

Not about the Sony Japan version specifically.... Silly question, but never having heard anything by Mr. Mills, is this worth getting as a starting point? I see it around a lot and keep pondering about picking it up. -i. np : Download - III

It's OK, but I'm a lot more excited about the "Live from Liquid Room" CD which is him DJ'ing...and of course the Purpose Maker series on vinyl.

It's as good a place as any :-) I'd also advise getting "Live at the Liquid Rooms" if you can find it. Some of the other Mills stuff is a little less easy to find, like the older "Waveform Transmissions" series et al. - Greg

if you have never heard anything by Jeff Mills, you need to. he is quite important in the heritage and lineage of this music we love (as well as being a white hot DJ). if you are coming in to mills from the IDM side, "Another Day" is a great crossover point, as most of the tracks are less hardened than some of his more minimal things designed expressly for the dance floor. Another Day is in my top 5 for 97. any of the purpose maker releases are also ace. peeeeeeeeeeeece NP: funkstorung: funkenstille Jeff Davis <pHlow> ____--~~~~~~vvvv~~~~ oooo812.831.7846 jjdavis@xnet.com____---- ( ( ( vvvv ~~~~~~ooooooooooooo ___----( ( \ \ \ \ \ vvv ooooooooooooooooooo ____---- ( \ \ \ \ \ \ \ http://www.xnet.com/~jjdavis/

and just to confuse you even more... while i think the liquid room CD and thepurpose maker twelves are excellent... i think the axis compilation CD is incredible and would whole heartedly reccomend it... i think it would also maybe be a better place to start.... whats that track off humana..'gamma players'? ooooohhhh... Currently Jeff Mills does excellent detroit minimal techno and tech-house on his own Purpose Maker and Axis labels. But he did do a fair amount of stringy ambient stuff on his earlier Axis label releases. If you buy this Axis comp cd, called The Other Day, you'll be able to hear what both sides of Jeff styles. But Jeff Mills is best known for his floor-friendly floor-filling pounding techno. -->-Lance--- p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states
