This is all pretty fucking sick. 165 dollars for four tracks, $165 is about 21 12"s on Modernmusic (average price $8)... I don't blame Henrik or anyone else holding an auction (I myself offered 500 SEK with is about $62, still a lot, but I don't blame anyone for not accepting 500 when he can get 1300 instead), I understand that there are few other ways of doing this (closed auction is one), but I just want to stress that it's a big shame that the one with the most money always grabs things even in this field. I know that this is how things work in this marketbullshitworld of ours but when the DEMAND is SOO MUCH bigger than the SUPPLY and something can be done about it, I think it should be done (which was the original intention with this mail). I know there are a couple of folks from labels on this list and here is my plea: don't limit editions and REISSUE! Although I already had the original CD of Analogue Bubbelbath 3 I went goo goo when Rephlex reissued it, not only did it drive down the prices (I saw it at $80 before the reissue), but it also made a great recording available to people (which is basically the most important thing), I've got the four Joyrexes, but I'd still like em to be re-printed, all on fucking white vinyl! ;) (and I don't have Legofeet, so please, Skam... :). I understand that is costs money to keep everything in print, and if money's lacking that's a good excuse. However, there are really no excuses for labels that make records in 1000 copies with a secondhand value of $60 (Jega, SKA006) to make a 12" in 100 copies. And folks, don't hesitate: Burn CD boots of deleted releases! Dub! And do us all a favor. Thanks all for 1997. Exactly! What kills me is that so many people in this business complain that the kids listening now have no sense of history and many of these same people are pressing these ludicrously limited editions. Kudos to Submerge, Warp, and a few others who actually seem to give a damn about the record buyer when it comes to their older releases. sorry, this is one of my pet peeves, d.w.

Not only that, but people with industry access should do everything in their power to re-release gems. I admire Coldcut for what they're doing -- they continue to push the envelope. I think they have the connections and the power to rerelease Double D and Steinski's classic cuts. There are young people like me who have never been able to own these records and quite frankly music cannot move forward without a strong historical background. Similarly, the "more beats and pieces" custom brakebeat record should be available to the public. There could be another T Power out there waiting to be discovered or a regular Joe Blow who can do things with those samples nobody even dreamed of. Access is key. That's why the "Let us play" CD-ROM is so great. It lets people make their own music with a push start from those who've been doing it.

As much as I hate to admit it, this is the only solution record companies are driving us to. I think it would be better if the original artists could get their royalty for their work, but if the music is kept hidden in the vaults or in the hands of a small minority, there is no other choice. I think Ubiquity's approach is excellent. Track down the original artists and license their songs from them to put in a comp or re-release. Just a thought... it might be but no-one can blame henrik or anyone else really - it's just market forces in action. personally i can live without the dubious excellence of any record if it costs that much.

it's a good idea in principle but i think you'd be surprised how little money some of our favourite labels have to work with. when they have lots of great new projects lined up, the ones in the past can tend to be put onto the back burner.

black would be good enough for me - my j5 on white vinyl is dreadfully pressed!

I burn alot of my vinyl only stuff to cd for personal listening... trading sounds like it'd be lots of fun when i consider the amount of extremely limited - way out of print stuff i know that i'd otherwise probably never get a chance to hear... but i also realize that this would indeed discourage a label to reissue a release... i *KNOW* that i would buy up reissues (if i enjoyed the material) even if i had a cd burn of it sitting here... why? its how i am... xtra tracks or not... but i suspect others are as devoted to their tunes when theres so many releases to buy... but i sure would love early plaid, black dog, mask i, joyrexs, that clear gescom that clear never responded to me about (even though i sent that really expensive imo =( ) , etc etc etc Chris brap@sonic.net http://www.sonic.net/~brap/ blackdog, vvm, whitezone-l, slipdisc C.Gosselin, PO Box 8264, Santa Rosa, CA 95407
