"clumsy drums"???? Laika???
Perhaps you may have thought so because the song, like many songs off
of the current Laika album, is in 7/8 time. (unless of course the remixer
changed the beat enough to make it clumsy)
Listen again. I think that this track (at least the album version) is
fucking excellent *IDM* because in order to be able to dance to it you
have to be intelligent enough to recognize a 7/8 beat and dance to a 7/8
beat (when dancing think "make squares & triangles", not just "bob
up-n-down and back-n-forth").

Laika shits on NIN from a great, great height. Although on the printed
page/screen, these lyrics seem like reznoresque goth posturing, they are
actually part of a more sophisticated and more subtly realized creative
voice that Margaret Feilder (sp?) has created. I'll admit that her voice
is not the strongest part of the band, but don't let this NIN comparison
fool you - she and her lyrics are nothing like NIN.

I guess "trip-hop" applies to Laika, but it is unfortunately limiting
term - they are a much more jazz oriented act than most regular trip hop
bands. They don't sample, their tracks are more musically and rhythmically
sophisticated then any other trip-hop act. I haven't heard this ep, but
I'm willing to bet that most of the remixes are inferior to their original
tracks.
