fucking pathetic. (yes, a beautiful way to start a message...) it's like the land of the hypocrites babbling on about how much "better," or more "intelligent" IDM is, while making a shitload of unintelligent and unwarranted statements. supposedly, a large number of people define IDM as music that you can dance to, but also "lounge" to because of its brilliant, wonderful, not-of-this earth, intense, and texture-filled programming/sound. so i suppose any musical score which is considered a waltz, must also be IDM since you can dance to it, but also "relax" to it. (given the "programming" is the score arrangement, the talent of the band/orchestra members, and perhaps the conductor..) there's also the appearence factor, which in some sense is supposed to be related to "selling out." what's the difference between wearing make up (hell, david bowie wore make up way before the term "selling out" was being tossed around like a cheap hooker...), and the way one is photographed on an album cover, or the packaging of a record or CD, or Richard James wearing AFX shirts, and Mikey P wearing u-Ziq shirts for that matter? and for some groups, it's simply part of an identity. skinny puppy without ogre covered in mud/fake blood, saran wrap, and/ or whatever else he could get his hands on, just wouldn't be skinny puppy. (yes, i know they're not considered IDM, but they played a huge part in the innovation and creativity of electronic music..) of course he didn't go wearing this shit when eating breakfast, or doing day to day activites, and the same probably goes for the prodigy, manson, or any other band. and this constant placing of blame on MTV is total bullshit. if someone hears the prodigy on the radio, at a club, from someone's dorm, or on MTV, they're most likely gonna decide on their own if they like the music or not. MTV isn't going to make that decision for them. if someone listens to what the recent "trend" is, they probably don't consider music an important or relevant part of their lives. (yes, there are a large number of people who don't own hundrds of records, tapes, or CDs... it might sound bizarre, but it's true..) and what is the big concern about what other people are listening to, and their "reasoning" behind it?? i like IDM for one basic reason. i enjoy the way it sounds. it's appealing to me. (okay, 1 1/2 reasons...) i'm wondering how many people on this list actually listen to the music they buy, compared to how much time they spend trying to define it, or bitch about other types of music. i love the "i just bought 25 records (which the person lists..) but haven't listened to them yet. any opinion on these..." well, the first opinion should be, "why the fuck don't you listen to the 25 records you bought," and than ask something half intelligent like "does anyone know if so and so released more material," or "does anyone know of any groups that have a similar style?" as for why the word techno is so taboo is ridiculous. do you actually think an artist/group tells their label/distributor what category to place their work under? i don't think they're gonna lose any sleep if they find their record or CD filed under "techno" at some local music store. everything's broken up into so many goddamn categories, it would just be easier to alphabetize everything. you want aphex, look under "a." drexciya, look under "d." pretty simple don't you think? (god forbid you might have to actually walk from the "b" section to the "w" section to find something...) so what's IDM? it's a label. it's a nice, convenient way to categorize music in stores, and on the WEB. so that people can look at you browsing through the IDM/ Electronica section and think "man, that person must be really, really smart, and so much fucking better than i am." this is probably one of the few places on the WEB, or possibly in society, where calling someone a stupid, mother fucking dickhead, is considered less of an insult than calling one a "technohead." and accusing one of liking MTV, is the equivalent of witnessing a rape, and not reporting it. yes, "we" are all so intelligent.. much love, chrisTiaN -- " In the future people will think it strange that we only ever used the phone to talk to one another. SUPER. Work Together. "
