Kandis: Senking (Karaoke Kalk 1) After being drawn in by the ultra cool, ambient-bordering-'post-rock' sound of the excellent motel ep (kk4, presented by none other then, kandis and saucer) I decided that the rest of this stuff might be worth checking out. Anyway, Kandis' Senking is a lovely journey full of experiments unlike any other. The title track kicks it off with some deep, low-fi, experimental electronics, not dissimilar to that which has been coming out of miami upstarts, schematic. Flip it over to hear 'luna corona', which, despite starting off with just a sole, simple little rhythm, it then breaks into all wild sound effects and deep "boooooop"s, finally a happy little three note melody complemented by a back up of beepings and faux-horns enters and continues for the duration of the track. This all leads up to the wonderful 'treasure island', which is more stuff along the lines of the opener, except focusing more on melody than anything else. So, if your looking for a refreshing closing to the already amazing musical year of '97, Karaoke Kalk's got the stuff for you! Microstudio/Ungai Patrol Split 12" (Carpet Bomb 2) Following up this spring's heralded first effort, microstudio's "cubensis", the carpet bomb boys are back. The favorite, Microstudio starts it all up with 'Rural Development Project', a 15 minute epic, wandering through tribal beats (with an obvious nod to the black dog), hypnotic bass, and those oh so brilliant melodies we all know and love from cubensis. On to the Ungai: They open up with the epononymus track, which consists of hectic breaks, and a chessy sample, that sounds more like a Plug, than a Bomb (get it...). Finally they finish it up with a mad, er.. "drill n' bass" track,'Mr. Greco', which make the spunk jazzers and spymaniacs look like the DMX Krew. All in all, another fine release for the Carpet Bombers. m u l t s a n t a . | . a t n a s t l u m

Right on... I found this to be much more enjoyable than the 1st Carpet Bomb release (which I loved!)... easily one of my tops this year. There was a page that was about these guys I thought (not the audio page, but another) but I can't find it... anyone know what I'm referring to or am I thinking of something else completely?
