sorry, but i gotta stick my nose in this one. this whole aphex "do it yourself" home project bullocks. (i'm from the states, but i just like saying "bullocks...") there was mention of adding a few major or minor chord progressions as part of "building" the composition. i've taken more than a few fundamental/theory/and comp. classes, and this is utter nonsense. yes, it's a good idea to learn the basics, so that you know what's been done, in order to create "the new." part of IDM/electronic/ experimental/whatever music, is to break this mold that's been presented to musicians, students, and listeners. a 2000 year old list of "rules" that one must follow in order to correctly compose a piece of music, and it's containing "parts." i'm not claiming to be any musical wizard, or "judge" of what's right and wrong, or good and bad. it comes down to an inclination towards one trade or another. in this case, music being the obvious "trade." even if you gave some toneless, rhythmicless, and relatively adaptive person a set of great synth patches, some sampled drum loops, and a decent overview of how to work a simple computer sequencer, he/ she is NOT gonna be pumping out IZ-US, or Come to Daddy, or anything relatively "cohesive." i'm not here to single out r.d.j or any other "artist." but some people simply "have it," and some don't. i'm guessing this has been said many times over (or maybe not), but you can teach someone about art or music, but you can't teach them how to BE an artist or musician. i'm gonna go out on a stretch here, but i'm pretty sure there's more people, who can wake up each day, put on their shoes (and tie them, given they have laces...) than the amount of people who have a natural inclination towards the "arts." and in "keeping" within the topic at hand, r.d.j. happens to be one of the latter. and it's not coincindence that "musicans" and "artists" seem to have an ability to be rather proficient in both fields. sorry, i don't have a review list (or at least don't feel like adding one to this already rather lengthy post...), or any insights regarding labels/releases/or catalog numbers. just a really, really, really long opinion on the IZ-US etc.. deal. oh, must say that the reznor/nin remix of bowie's IAOA is ultra-nifty. as is the video... trying to be "intelligent," chrisTiaN :i'm not even gonna start with the whole "what equipment does aphex use" argument. unless you've been in the man's house/bank, and have had a personal tour, it will probably remain richards' little secret. (but i would bet it's nothing out of the "ordinary...") -- " In the future people will think it strange that we only ever used the phone to talk to one another. SUPER. Work Together. "
