Gonzi wrote the other day: Sorry if this thread is annoying for some of the listmembers, but I think as we begin to see more collaborations such as the things bjork has been doing we're going to be having to deal with these questions of authorship and who is really responsible for the music more and more. ----------- Well, I have to jump in with my two cents here, if only because these "questions of authorship" are, in all essence, moot, if not ridiculous. These folks are sampling, or using sampled sound, no? Since when were Bjoerk, RDJ, Autechre, Cylob (well, he plays trombone, but rarely), et al., playing live instruments 100% of the time? These artists/thieves/whatever are all taking sound from other people (come on you slags) or equipment (303, anyone?). But this is academic, and anyone on this list should know that off the bat before making comments about "authorship." Especially you, Gonzi. N.B.: While I've heard only one Bjoerk single (which was nice), I like these other artists a great deal, regardless of how they got their stuff to the market, or how it was made, or which producers were paid off. Let's get the bullshit bickering over with, since all answers to questions of authorship in electronic, sampled music are really questions of *legitimacy*, which is a subjective evaluation based on how elitist you feel like pretending on a particular day. Keep the dick size contests off the list, fellas. How about some quality reviews, instead?

Oh Alex. Questions of authorship are one of the most interesting issues of electronic music - especially sample based music. At least I think so at any rate. Nothing ridiculous about it.

Uhhh....now you're starting to split hairs. I'm not talking about who makes the equipment (but who taught them to make the equipment, who taught the person that taught him, aren't his parents really responsible for him being here at all? You get the idea), I'm talking about who writes the songs and who makes the music. It's not quite as complicated as you're making it, it's right there in black and white in the liner notes.

Show me yours and I'll show you mine. (I love that saying..) Franz:

You can send your reviews to me first if you wish. Sorry if I was under the mistaken impression that the list was created with discussion of music in mind. I will make a note not to question any listmembers ideas again. (you're still more than welcome to question mine...) Warren, Warren...

Insulting the whole list will get you everywhere, honey. Agh! I can't take it anymore. Forgive me if I happen to think that our Ken knows the score abit more than you iDM lot having been in the trenches himself. So I respectfully bestow the last word to him and his previous post on the subject. love, gunziE. (Oh for the SF IDM Krew let me know what happens with Cyberfest, I'm curious. I wouldn't count on Richard playing, I reckon he'll want to get off that fucking bus and on a jet home ASAP - or at least get in a full day's rest and record shopping. hehe.)
