OK ... this is bugging the hell out of me now (not you, Dan (-: ) ... I could *swear* that this rang a bell with me ... being the world's biggest Joy Division/New Order freak at the time (if I say so myself (-: ) ... I coulda sworn there was something that this came out on, back in the day. It wasn't coming to me ... something on Touch? One of those 5 classic "Rising From The Red Sands" tapes? What was it? I just looked in the back of my copy of Mark Johnson's "An Ideal for Living", (an absolutely vital, essential read) and I see this entry: "Prime 5.8.6" (recorded Feb.-Mar. '82, debut 21 May 1982, released, in part, Dec. 1982 on "Touch 1"). AHA! Thought so ... *rustle* I have "Touch 1", buried someplace. Anyway, I followed the trail back. On page 103: *"Prime 5.8.6." (21 minutes; recorded Feb. 82; debut 21 May 82): New Order (but mostly Bernard and Steve) composed this original version of "5.8.6" (which also contains rhythm elements later surfacing in "Ultraviolence" and "Blue Monday") ona 4-track. It was first played in public as the soundtrack to the video for the opening of Factory's The Hacienda (FAC 51) after Tony Wilson asked the group for 20 minutes of "pap", but got more than he bargained for. Three minutes of the piece were used on the band's computer graphic "Video Single", which was debuted at the Almeida Video Festival in Islington on 4 June 82, and most of it was "published" in two sections in the cassette magazine "Touch" (No. 1, December 1982). The visual component of the video was developed by Steve on his Apple II computer, and combined with some footage taken on tour. Then, on page 107 we find A Factory Video (FAC 56/FACTUS 5; released 18 August 1982) 1. Ceremony (Comanche Student Union; 6 Feb. 81) 2. In a Lonely Place (Imperial Cinema, Birmingham, 23 Jan. 82) 3. Video Single (cf. "Prime 5.8.6.") (visual remixed from that shown at the Almeida Video Festival) (My copy of this video was stolen about 10 years ago, which helped me forget about the origins of this track. :-( )

Anyone that hears this track and who owns Meat Beat Manifesto's "99%" should listen to it ("As You Said") and then listen to "Hello Teenage America" from "99%" ... - Greg
