What is even more curious is that people who buy mc303s cant understand why some people dont like them. People have as much right to dislike a piece of equipment as much as others do to like a piece last I checked. Any piece of gear is only as good as the person using it. So the moral of the story is never slag another man's gear... I entirely agree with this...I do not understand the amount of critism the poor mc303 gets... Perhaps it offend rightous techno purists? Surely this is a good thing? I think that's the problem that people have with these wannabe-303's etc. as it is there is already alot of shit techno coming out these days, and the glut of new "techno-boxes" can only add to the frenzy. i really have no problem with the boxes themselves (some of them sound rather nice), but i worry that the end result will be much more BAD music getting thrown around with the good stuff. personally, i would have to agree with whomever mentioned this before: i find it much more interesting to create your own drums/synth samples and really get deep in the programming than be able to get them all from one box. heck, that's what originally got me into Ae and aphex in the first place. granted, give a talented producer an mc-303 or whatever and I'm sure you'll get some great stuff out of it. np: microstoria_snd (damn this is good). _________________________________________________ Brian Rachielles- UC Santa Barbara (.b) Production Director KCSB fm 91.9 1997-98 Audio Program thurs 2-4am ambient-idm-noise web- http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Club/4980

They'd better increase the price of electric guitars or pretty soon there will be a flood of bad grunge music, or, Heaven help us, Southern Blooze... You already know to steer clear (assuming you dislike the stuff), so where is the problem? I figure the more music the better. What if the next artist who is dear to your heart discovers his or her interest in music by messing with some box like an MC303, and then moves far beyond the inherent limitations -- even if only out of frustration? --Mark

i think some are bristling at the suggestion that you can put "techno in a box" for the Average Joe to purchase. and, so what, tons of those mc303s are going to LA commercial guys who will use the presets in Ford Explorer commercials. ask me if i give a shit. i am sure that if you give an mc303 to a talented musician that (s)he will make a good song with it. i am equally sure that if you give one to a hack you will get hack music. irdial, much as i loathe them, had the right idea with their "mariopaint" record. the results were musically worthless but the idea was conceptually sound. maybe i'll get all my friends to do a "mc303" record ala "mariopaint". there are many reasons to criticise the mc303 as a piece of supposedly professional-quality studio gear, but i really think most people are offended at the ideological level rather than the technical. it's the same thing with the rebirth rb338. i have used or owned the real 808 and 303 and there is almost nothing they can give you that rebirth can't except a big fat erection cos you own a rare piece of gear that lots of techno wannabees would pee themselves (or pay stupid amounts of cash) to get. we already had thaddi this morning saying how the rebirth was a toy. is that a note of fear i detect? uh oh! they're letting girls in the secret clubhouse!! whatever next? -- Jon Drukman jsd@gamespot.com SpotMedia Communications ...I was an infinitely hot and dense dot...

On the topic of 303 clones, the program rack303 by David Karla is just about the most fun I've ever had clothed. It runs under BeOS, which means you can run 8 instances of the program and tweak your frigging brains out. It sounds perfect, syncs to MIDI (or the GeekPort if you've got a BeBox -- I don't)and includes some extras you can't get on a real 303, like 6 different waveforms, delays, stereo panning, etc. And it's free. The only catch is that it only runs on top of BeOS, so unless you've got a fast PCI Powermac or a BeBox you're SOL. http://www.zog.net.au/dak/rack/index.html 303's are cuddly and all, but with the advances in software synth modeling over last 12 months or so I'd save my money and buy a nice computer instead. -d.w.

hang on!?! surely the mc-303 is made for Techno Purists?!! Every drum sound, pad sound and synth sound is just some attempt at a classic techno preset! If you want to make music and youve got any imagination youll buy a sampler and make youre own drums and synths. Ive heard 3 or 4 demos sent to spymania and other labels which were completely comprised of mc-303 and they were the most boring, unoriginal pieces of cack ive ever heard... If you want to start in music either buy shit loads of nice synths, or a sampler.... or even a good computer, dont buy a sound module. Steve /k/./F/
