Hot off da sleaze for today:
quoted 1 line START QUOTE>START QUOTE
British techno act THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS have finally settled a long-standing fight with American duo THE DUST BROTHERS - who threatened to sue them for stealing their name when they first started out. The SETTING SUN hitmakers - who initially dubbed themselves The Dust Brothers even though the American duo had already taken the name - were forced to change their name after the spat with the Los Angeles-based pair. At the time the Americans were more well-known as high-profile producers and since then have produced BECK's critically acclaimed ODELAY and are currently working on THE ROLLING STONES' new album. Now the two groups have buried the hatchet and are planning to collaborate on a soundtrack for the film DEAD MAN ON CAMPUS, which is set to be released in America in the autumn. Dust Brother JOHN KING met Chemical Brother TOM ROWLANDS at their recent Los Angeles show. And he says, "He was cool and said he was sorry about stealing our name." Awww - group hug. and if that wasn't enough: INSIDER GOSSIP ON THE NEW STAR WARS: ...on the musical front, it had been announced that the SNEAKER PIMPS have been signed up by STAR WARS producer GEORGE LUCAS to rejuvenate the Star Wars theme for the new installments of the sci-fi trilogy. And the British dance gurus are looking forward to giving the trademark tune a new twist. Sneaker Pimp CHRIS CORNER says, "We're doing a drum and bass disco version of the theme. We don't know exactly what's going on but they're giving us all the parts of the original music, the strings and whatever, and we're gonna do something with it for the next set of movies."

I thought it was enough when those horrid mixes of Phantom Of The Opera by some unnamed group came out a few years back. I guess the SW theme could use a little modernizing. Would love to hear if they try to sneak in a sample or two of that Caustic Window track that samples R2D2 off Joyrex J5. =) -- guyjr@ns.gt.ed.net | I.D.M.- That stage in sleeping when your feet are a.k.a., Guy Elden, Jr. | moving faster than your eyes.

On a slightly related note, I was at Cloudwatch (a chill out gathering) at John Hopkins University in Baltimore this weekend, and DJ Spooky was one of the scheduled artists there. During his set he spun a hip-hop beat on top of the "Darth Vader" theme from the Empire Strikes Back Soundtrack. It was definitely amusing and nostalgic, but not something I would expect anyone to take seriously.... PeaCE jAmEs

I was just about to say that, although that is actually a track, it's not something DJ Spooky did with 2 records (god knows, from what I heard at Cloudwatch I'd be amazed). anyone know the name of that record? that track is loads of fun.. on a rather useless note, DJ Who (I'm pretty sure) played the same track in the lobby a few minutes later :D __ __\ \ / /_\ \ \_____/ , m7=

I got a white label from Asphodel a few weeks ago of this track. It's either We or Byzar (I forget). It's quite a fun track, although I prefer the B side which is a really dark weird hip-hop tune. It won't be released commercially due to the samples. Jeff

Sounds positively evil to me - I've got this rip-off of the MECO Star Wars theme done by the Marty Gold Orchestra for Peter Pan Records (a label whose releases I've only seen in toy stores) and it's a schlock masterpiece. Equally hideous was the bonus disco 12" that came with the STAR TREK III Search for Spock soundtrack. A true jem in my collection. And what about that U2 version of the Mission Impossible theme - they couldn't even do the tune in 5/4 time. Pathetic. I still think George Lucas ought to let Autechre score the new flix. A song like "Nuane" would sound great during the space fight scenes, and some non-beat-oriented material would work great for other parts. GD

I think I know what you've talking about... While we're on the subject, has anyone heard Derek Wadworth's soundtrack music for the second season of the British cult sci-fi series 'Space: 1999'? Very Tom Jenkinson-esque, sans d&b influences, of course :) [http://www.uta.fi/~trerra/space1999.html] transmission from the pHinnWeb Bunker over, ekku the maintainer of pHinnWeb - everything u ever wanted to know about Finnish electronica scene but were too afraid of the reindeer trerra@uta.fi | http://www.uta.fi/~trerra | http://www.sci.fi/~phinnweb
