Definitley get As One's Reflections, classic detroit style, and if you can find it get Reflections on Reflections, a remix album of the above by some top notch people Like Carl Craig and Balil (I just happened to pick this up the weekend in NYC along with the Tour de France 12"--I'm a happy camper.) this is a great mellow record, made as the soundtrack to a wonderful film about the us space program called "for all mankind". most of the cliche astronaut/space samples you heard in ambient music a few years back came from this movie in fact. apollo is not my favorite eno ambient record but it is very good. if you don't have any of the following, consider getting them first: ambient 4 on land, thursday afternoon, the shutov assembly.

trance by former members of zoviet france. i'm surprised at how badly these albums held up. i loved them when they came out but now i'm quite bored with them.

very boring early 90's r&s "user friendly" trance with irritating american indian samples.

brilliant jazz/ambient/noise collision. scary as all get out.

can't go wrong with UR. they rule.

another great paul schutze album. much more serene than new maps, plus much more on the electronic/gamelan side of things.

if this is the will with rhys of front line assembly, run far far away. bad bad bad gothic stuff with hideously embarrassingly bad lyrics.

super commercial house/trance for top 40 clubs. i don't like it but my wife loves it.

i have one of these, can't remember which... all the good tracks are on the respective artists albums. if you aren't familiar with the artists, it's a good introduction.

good mix of rare astralwerks tracks, unfortunately marred by extremely crappy sound quality.

heh, i'll tell bob you called it that. :) his stuff ranges from extremely creepy to extremely pretty. on the pretty end of the spectrum are albums like "gaudi" with lots of chords & melodies & gentle percussion loops. on the creepy end you have his collaboration with lustmord called "stalker" which gets my vote for best abstract noise collage album of last year. most of the stuff on the hearts of space sub-label Fathom is worth a listen. if you saw "baraka" and liked the synth music, check out anything by michael stearns. steve roach is pretty dependable; i especially like his "world music"-y project Suspended Memories. Lightwave is a really good "scary ambient" project. that oughta get you started. -- Jon Drukman jsd@gamespot.com SpotMedia Communications How the drunk and the maimed both are dragged forward out of the arena like a boneless Christ, one man under each arm, feet dragging, eyes on the aether. Brilliant, If you listen to it in the shop youll flick the needle over all forty minutes and say 'it doesnt change!'... but it does, this is what trance music is really about. In C is a composition consisting of several musical patterns all based around one simple musical theme. The musicians (including Jon hassel on the original mid-sixties recording) change the patterns at will and in some ways its quite strict, but it is improvisation, i guess its more like improv similar to traditional indian raga. The original recording and the 25th anniversary recording are both excellent, Terry Riley reccommends the 25th anniv. recording over the original i believe, however either one is excellent. I also Heavily reccomend 'Poppy Nogood and the phantom band' which is my favourite Riley piece and 'A rainbow in curved air' (which incidently was sampled by Howie B on the 'The time has come' remixes on mowax..)

I dont know this? If you have found this in a shop and dont want it im interested in buying this off you, Im also interested in getting hold of a copy of 'Persian Surgery Dervishes' by Riley if anyone can help? in fact anything interesting by Riley...

I second this assessment. I listen to this stuff on long car trips :)

Close--there are 52 (53?) patterns which everyone plays in strict succession (always the same order), underneath a pulse played on the top octaves of a piano "by a beautiful girl" as the score says (for whatever *that*'s worth--it was the sixties, you know--I'd just as soon substitute a beautiful guy). Each person decides on his/her own when to move to the next pattern, though, so eventually several of the patterns overlap, and the piece oozes thru several textures and harmonic areas. Very elegant. Incidentally, the score suggests a performance taking place over a year--one pattern a week. As far as I know, no one's actually done this. :) If this controlled randomness approach interests you, look for Fredric Rzewski's "Les Moutons de Panurge"--everyone plays the same tune, but additively (note 1, notes 1+2, notes 1+2+3, etc.) and you're *supposed* to get lost (i.e. a "correct" performance is one in which the notation is *not* followed accurately). And I can't let this go without plugging Steve Reich's Music for 18 Musicians. A full hour of expertly paced and seriously blissed-out groove (w/ no drums). Fabulous.
