As an Autechre/Gescom fanatic I have to admit that this is most probably one of the weakest releases by them. Quite an obscure French label, too. Hard, minimal, metallic clonking and clanking, not your usual we're-going-to-mess-with-your-sense-of-rhythm or we'll-make-you-dream-of-fractals-and-mathematic-formulae-Autechre. Not a lot of variance in rhythm structure and hardly any melody (unless you count the whiny noises). If you like the Autechre remix of Mark Broom's Any Number Between 1-17, you should get Motor. Though the record has grown on me during the years, it's still one of my least favourite releases by Booth/Brown. I just noticed a week ago that I still haven't even opened my copy of the Gescom MD, let alone listened to it. I don't event have an MD player. I buy vinyl, damn it. I'm also trying not to explode while trying to get my hands on a few choice slabs of not-so-IDM wax. Why do online record shops have items in their catalogue that they don't have in stock and are totally unable to get? I've tried at least six. But I digress. A few rounds of http://www.kvetch.com/ and I'll feel a tad better. -- nuutti-iivari meriläinen gordon at diversion dot org http colon slash slash www dot diversion dot org slash --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Personally I like this record, a few years old now, but it's not quite as 'detailed' as Ae's current material but a lot of people seem to be going off this style anyway. Gescom in their more accessible I'd say and it's really good for getting into a trance state to, quite banging, clonking and clanking, reminds me of the sounds from the inside an engine, deep in the heart of it, reminds me of those Castrol GTX tb commercials. Cool. Would be quite good if Ae returned to this style but I think they're way past the point of no return now with their latest stuff which is like white noise in slow motion. I think "Motor 1" has a jubilant, fun melody and rhythm to it once you get to about the 5th or 6th minute. I absolutely love that track and would buy it only for "Motor 1". The remaining tracks are, unfortunately, just like the previous description. There are days- usually warm and sunny ones- when I just can't get enough of "Motor 1" __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! The motor 12" is an amazingly heavy piece of vinyl for such a low-quality recording. It reminds me more of "cavity job" than other Gescom stuff; It's sort of silly and dancy, not like too many other Gescom endeavors. There's also way too much reverb. I'll probably keep it since I already have it, but if I didn't have it already I probably wouldn't bother to buy it. later Andrew -| Andrew Schrock | aschrock@cs.brandeis.edu |- --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

The first track on this EP, Motor 1 rates highly as a favourite ambient electronic track. Beautiful warm and lush melodies, something which would sound like a very well tuned engine playing some nice chords on the keyboards (if you get my drift). The other tracks are in a more harder vein which borders on Ae material on Chichlisuite. For some reason they also remind me of Ae's remix of Push Button Objects - Odd Jobs, whilst Motor 1 is more in the Ae Keynell remix style. That's funny, I wrote the same EXACT thing on the inside back cover of a book of matches from 'hollywood bail bonds' one rainy night cruising around Crenshaw with my nigga's, drinking forties and bumping NWA. That must have been around, '93/'94? What a strange coincidence! ;-) beroc --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Hey! I read that, it was a brilliant review! It was about the time "Gangsta Gangsta" came on and I used those matches to spark a J cuz my Zippo got wet when I spilled some Red Bull on the wick!! I didnt agree with your argument that the music represented the diminishing importance of humanity in the context of computer generated music, but you made some good points about how the pounding beat's influence on passive listeners was analoguos to the effect of repetitive factory jobs on blue collar laboror's lives! Not only that, but that phone number came in handy later on that night when I got jacked up by the cops for bustin' that bottle over that crackhead's back for lookin' at me crazy! Geez! they throw you in the slam for EVERYTHING these days! ernie Ernesto Ikerd, (817) 763-4795 Company Graphics, Dept 17, MZ-4202 Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company Fort Worth, Texas --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
