I am looking to hear music that contains synths similar to those found in certain AFX songs: every day, the start of the flowers mix, and about 1.44 into the beck mix. I like them very much: beautiful, simple, emotional. they tear at me. there has to be someone who does lots of stuff like that. thks

jarre started off as a real pioneer... back in 1976 with "oxygene", a great amorphous blob of mellotrons, analog synths, ancient rhythm boxes. really a great record, still stands up, for the most part. he's had his ups and downs over the years. i still check in on him now and then because oxygene (and its followup equinoxe) were my first introduction to entirely synthetic music. his experiments with fairlights and sampling in the early 80's yielded "zoolook", a real touchstone for idm development (at least for me it was). i remember lying on the floor, completely stoned, listening to this one back in the mid 80's and just flipping out completely... another one of those "i never knew music could sound like THAT" epiphanies. nowadays he's mostly crap, unfortunately. although i would be more likely to describe him as "grandiose" rather than "syrupy" (although certainly there's a little of that as well). interestingly, i just got a copy of his most recent work, which is a "sequel" to the original Oxygene. it is actually pretty good in places, with jarre busting out the old moogs, arps and mellotrons for another go round the space music block. (of course he had to ruin it by throwing in some quasmidi and nord stuff, and dabbling unsuccessfully with "contemporary dance" (he ends up sounding like robert miles in places) as well...) now if you want saccharine, check out tangerine dream... they really got into heavy syrup in their later years. (if you use that emulator shakuhachi sound again you will die!!!) recommended jarre listening: - oxygene - equinoxe - zoolook - en attendant cousteau (skip straight to the title track for 47 minutes of underwater ambience that would do eno proud) -- Jon Drukman jsd@gamespot.com SpotMedia Communications How the drunk and the maimed both are dragged forward out of the arena like a boneless Christ, one man under each arm, feet dragging, eyes on the aether. It's not the synths that create the emotions, it's the person playing them! While I'm still speaking, let me defend Richard for a while. I know it's trendy to be anti-RDJ on IDM these days but don't forget that he simply is the best. SAW1, SAW2, I care, AB3, AB4, Classics, Ventolin, HAB1, HAB2, On, RDJ...they're all great and nobody else has put that much consistent material. Of course we all knew this already but sometimes you need to remind yourself. I admit RDJ has an arrogant attitude but with the feeling found in tracks like for example "On", you just can't believe that he is such an evil person. So if you're feeling anti-RDJ, turn whatever you're listening to off and put on you're favourite AFX track instead.

6) Should be "AFX Dub", according to the latest discography. I agree with you there about how all of the above releases are great (except AB4). I don't have a problem with his music, he has just been discussed WAY TOO MUCH. I love his music but I can't stand hearing about it him day after day after day after day for months and months. When I see a post about RDJ I usually skip it, because I think I have learned enough about him. I have absolutely no desire to every look at another post or interview about him ever again. Hi Johan,

well that's not strictly true mate, and not what the geezer was asking. i'm sure if you told him what synths were used, and if left to his own devices, he's every bit as capable of coming up with the some of the emotive (gag) sounds as mr james. i would've pointed the enquirant at "korg" synths, if he's looking for nice rich pad sounds. or something cheap and twiddly like an SH101 or Juno6 if he wants analog punch and bleeps.

grin, or brainwash yourself again? of course, its all about free choice, and if you choose to listen to RDJ, good for you. what i would say is that your missing out on a lot of good 'other' music by being so blinkered in your attitudes. check out some of the 'other' bands mentioned on this list, they're not all tossers.

Actually, my initial interest in aphex's music oh so long ago led me to Luke Vibert, Cylob, Squarepusher, mike p and other warp acts such as Autechre and yourself (a-hem). It also helped me develop a general open-mindedness in my listening and a quite jaded tolerance for extreme amounts of distortion, chaos, sonic mayhem - as well as an appreciation for the quietest, lush, most subtle melodies. richard is good medicine for your ears. thank you richard. _____ / ,-,_) /,_) (/ RESH Live & Direct from the G-Spot, Orange County, California, USA http://www1.linkonline.net/fresh/fresh.htm

I'll be quite happy to offer my head to use as Richard's doormat till my brain rusts and my cock drops off. Cheerio! What's On The Soya Sound Burger? Equilibrium Of Ideology / Pharmaceutical Buzzword 175 - Subconscious Geography
