All this stuffs good, but i reckon theres nothing to end the day like, John Coltrane 'Interstellar Space' or Ornette Colemans 'Free Jazz'... a different type of 'easy' listening.. kF

My opinion of Getz/gilberto is that track one 'The girl from Ipanema' is worth buying the album for alone... it really does rank in my top 20 tunes ever, track 2 has some nice sax...and then theres the one where he says vi,vi,vi,vi,vi,vi thats nice, but the rest all seems to meld into one easy listening samba. kF

that would be joao gilberto...you can get that track [a duet performed with astrud gilberto], and a few other great samba tunes, like "desafinado," on the getz/gilberto [verve] record... later, jamesbt -- Lead Encoding Specialist N2K Entertainment/Music Boulevard http://www.musicblvd.com http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Alley/4055

It's dark and cool right now, and I'm longing for a special sound. Can anyone on the list reccomend some cool jazz with an emphasis on percussion? Not the Art Blakey-type mash ups. Something complex, but not overbearing. Thanks in advance. grant.h.horne http://delta.is.tcu.edu/~ghhorne/

Try anything on Chess Records. All jazz is good. That and anything by Stan Getz and the guy who wrote "Girl From Ipanema" -- he has a box set out right now but his name escapes my memory. And speaking of him, try any Brazilian samba, trust me, you'll like it.

Not to contradict any of the above but if it is actually jazz you're after then you're into another type of music that has a ton of different genres and sub-genres. If it's my kind of cool jazz then:- John Coltrane is good but he has released lots of different stuff. Try his 'Ballads', 'Coltrane' or 'Lush Life' for mellow grooves; try his album 'The Avant-Garde' w/ Don Cherry for something with a bit more up-tempo. Try also 'The Shape of Jazz to Come' by Ornette Coleman or pretty much anything by Eric Dolphy (a good starter is 'The Essential Eric Dolphy' [no duh!] I know this isn't the up-their-owns-backends jazz appreciation list so I'll cut this short here. Grant Green's "Carryin' On", Ronnie Foster's "Two-Headed Freap" and Donald Byrd's "Kofi" all feature sounds that have been rebaked for the 90's. Most of these BN recordings were done in the 60's and early 70's.

'Trane's duets with Eric Dolphy are my favorite. Loud jams, and keen melody. Paul Rafanello intone@warwick.net
