Here's the deal: To do my part in improving the state of the IDM list I will do something I normally don't take the time to do, try to write a review for you all to absorb. I hate writing about music, so please notice the sacrifice that I am making for your benefit... ;) Also, don't expect any amazing piece of writing either, I'm horrible at writing reviews. Quench : A Journey into Electonix : U-Cover Records The press release that s://kimo sent out about this release said it was actually Funckarma in disguise, but I have my doubts. The tracklisting itself states that the first track is 'refuncked' by Funckarma, but that does not mean that the entire CD is by him/them. The tracks on the CD are too 'instrumental' to be Funckarma (I think). A nice mixture of glitchy sounds, guitar samples in places, some Indian influences in places, heavy-beets(tm), melodic interludes, vocal samples (I swear I remember hearing vocal samples earlier, but I can't find 'em now, I may have been dreaming). Reminds me of a combination of Foreign Terrain meets Lexaunculpt meets Fennesz meets generic hip-hop DJ, sort of. Overall: (e^pi)/sqrt(7) out of 10 hess --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Well, I'm not going to comment on the Funckarma mystery, but this is a *really* nice CD. It also seizes the crown for "most infuriating CD to put in your CD player" as it's completely blank! Gar! I like it more than Hess does, I give it 0xC stars. If you thought the Autechre LP5 CD was annoying, wait until you see this one... you have to look at the matrix numbers to figure out which side is up (the type should face DOWN, so it looks backwards if you're looking down at it in your player.) Since this is a more limited release, I think the list will be spared a repeat of the "D00d! There's a trippy image on the Ae CD!" thread. All praises etc etc. .Bil. That Quench Cd is pretty cool, but its not Funckarma its Quench !! Quench will have their 1st vinyl in 3 weeks on DUB (Dub 12- Chunk ep) Its ultra cool electronica with nice downtempo (avantgarde Hip hop!?) beats and the most beautyfull sounds and melodies. I understand the mix up with Funckarma (but they are more freaky and cutting edge then Quench imo) The records comes with a limited 7" (Dub 12.1) Serge --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

The DUB label is getting famous by bringing new talented artists in the electronica field and again they manage to bring you some ultra cool electronica by a new name. A great 12" (and limited bonus 7"!!) wich can stand the highest critics. Relaxed advanced beats with beautyfull sounds and great melodies. The downtempo beats seems to be inspired by the more forward thinking Hip hop and R&B producers ,and will impress many with their relaxed but still infentive programing and the bright atmosphere. Just sit back and enjoy! Future classic!! >> While I haven't heard this 12", if it sounds anything like the Quench CD on U-Cover this description is unbelievably misleading. The Quench CD sounds a lot like a mix of the worse aspects of Reload's A Collection of Short Stories and Autechre's Chiastic Slide: the interesting melodies are completely submerged behind clanks and harsh metallic scratches (like Q-Bert using bricks, mortar and hacksaw blades). The beauty (I think) of Ae's work is that the tracks always snowball: they start small and just keep accumulating parts that add to all aspects of the track. Quench's tracks on their CD go somewhere for about thirty seconds and then change direction, sound and time sequence entirely. I also mentioned Reload's classic LP because I think the Quench CD has some of the same elements in the more industrial sounds and the dark, anti-human futuristic atmosphere it tries to create, but I think that unlike Reload they never let the sun shine in and the atmospheres they create they break just as soon after so you are never totally drawn into the mix. I absolutely loved Funckarma's material on DUB, which is why I find it hard to believe Quench could be the same producers. Oh well. Hopefully this new Quench 12"+7" will see them returning to the unbelievably skilled and innovative sound we remember from the Funckarma 12"s. Well I did allready hear the new Quench release :) and it's way different from there CD release (wich was really experimental) The EP contains 4 tracks with a clear line. The tracks are pretty laidback and those R&B influences are not really obvious , but the beats are "advanced" but still clear enough to let your head go up and down the whole track (like Method man and Mary j Blige is the "all I need" video :). Its not as easy going as Arovane ,it has that relaxed atmosphere but there is some hidden energy wich wants to come out. I think its really fresh.... Serge

Despite rumours to the contrary, I've been informed in no uncertain terms that Quench is *not* Funckarma. They're friends, and Funckarma helped them out with a remix, but that's where the connection ends. Just thought y'all might like to know.
