It should be noted that the new David Bowie album coming out very soon is supposed to be a drum'n bass rave album. He wants to tour North America doing a combination concert/rave over 2 nights in many cities. I suspect that he's brought in some interesting producers for this music, and there's a very small possibility that it could be good. Then again... onnow: Autechre "Chiastic Slide" (warp promo) Lame Thread Prevention in Effect: Aaron Michelson --------------------------------------------------------------------- aw-teck'r (autechre) "Everything you Know is Wrong" For reviews, interviews, art & trash http://www.on-it.net/~aaron/ aaron@defiant.on-it.net

You know, people are really going to be down on Bowie for doing this, but I think I'm willing to give him a chance and at least listen to the record. You have to keep in mind that, once upon a time, Bowie was very much an experimental artist and just because he's put out some really annoying records lately and has a few gray hairs doesn't mean he hasn't got "the right" to make drum&bass or ravehardtekno or what have you. As for the concert/rave thing.. boomer Bowie fans + sixteen year olds with pigtails on E = a mighty interesting evening Cid. ____________________________________ Cindy Desmarais ---- http://weber.u.washington.edu/~cid ---- cid@u.washington.edu ____________________________________

Unfortunately, having heard the new single.... I'm not impressed in the slightest. It's like a cheesy metal song with a poorly developed break replacing a normal drum beat. I found it to be really boring, fortunately the video itself was quite pleasant to watch. I suspect however, that the weirder non-single tracks from the album could be pretty neat. But it still remains to be heard just how good they are. onnow: sultan 2 (fax) pleasant nighttime music (it's 6:00am) Lame Thread Prevention in Effect: Aaron Michelson --------------------------------------------------------------------- aw-teck'r (autechre) "Everything you Know is Wrong" For reviews, interviews, art & trash http://www.on-it.net/~aaron/ aaron@defiant.on-it.net

Well, I'm a "boomer [ex-]Bowie fan" (*looks up at milk crate with 26 Bowie albums in it, albeit none released after 1984*) who sees 16 year olds with pigtails on E almost every weekend at raves, no big deal :-) I dunno about the DB thing, though. On the one hand, being a former massive Bowie fanatic, I keep an eye out on what he's doing. I certainly give him serious props for keeping his eyes and ears open at this stage of the game; I'm sorry, but people like Neil Young and Pink Floyd and the Rolling Stones might be out there still trodding the boards, but I haven't got the vaguest interest in anything they're doing nowadays, just the same ol' same ol' Rock thing which is so beyond dead it's ridiculous. At least David's trying to do *something* on the contemporary tip. On the other hand, if you saw him do "Little Wonder" at that VH-1 Fashion Awards thing, you saw exactly what Gonzi was talking about - interludes of hey-this-sounds-pretty-cool Jungle percussion-based music crashed together with utter guitar wank rubbish courtesy of Uncle Feste... erm, I mean Reeves Gabrels and the regular human percussionist doing non-Jungle percussion things. It was like oil and water. I'm all for hybrids, but I wish they were all like the hybrid I'm listening to right at this moment - "Dead Cities". - Greg (Who is frightened by the fact that he almost agreed with Gonzi in public)
