While I haven't heard it... some mention was just made of it on the Breaks list and it was either done by Source Direct or remixed by Source Direct, who are some of the best jungle producers, IMHO. Source Direct = Source Direct = Sounds of Life = X-Files = Oblivion = Mirage..... Labels = Metalheadz = Odyssee = Basement = Streetbeats = Certificate 18 = Razors Edge Discography = at least 15 12" BTW..someone mentioned that Innervisions was Source Direct....wrong...Innervisions is Jay Majik...another source of good sounds -- Keith Rogers

I sort of liked Dubstar the first time I listened to it, but I wasn't really paying much attention. When I tried to actively listen to the album later, I just got fed up with the way everything took at least five minutes to develop into anything interesting. If you're going to make epics, don't start so small and repeat so often that it takes half the track just to get started. 'Capital D' and 'Call & Response' are the two best tracks on there, and they were on the "Controlled Developments" EP they released nearly 2 years ago. 'Love & Hate' was decent but not memorable enough to merit throwing down the $16 I paid for this thing. Mediocre. I agree with Mark: techstep by numbers to me.

no forward development? They haven't released a tech-step track until now - that certainly marks a change. And the hard funk bass line of "Dubstar" is new to their style. And doesn't "Love & Hate" make you smile when they mix soft pads with old skool hoover sounds? some news: Now that they've breathed life into Exorcise The Demons, Source Direct's own imprint's catalogue will be resurrected and repackaged. "The Crane" and "Snake Style" have been remixed, but are yet to be scheduled. After a year spent working intensively in their home studio Source Direct are determined to marshal their forces in a serious way in 1999, with DJ tours, remixes and single releases being planned. Just thought I'd try and defend the album a bit after all the almost universally negative reviews it seems to be getting here. Although I didn't think all that much of this album when I first heard it, I've got to say it's growing on me quite a lot. Some of the new sounds they're bringing in are pretty cool - Technical Warfare sounds like Bartok, and for some reason Haunted reminds me of Godspeed you black emperor. Admittedly, it's not too original, but it seems a bit unfair to accuse them of constantly ripping off Photek (last track's ni ten ichi ryu-isms aside) - after all, didn't they all help to come up with that sharp St. Albans sound. Could probably do with a bit more variety too, but I've put it onto tape with some of their older tracks as well (crystal house, 12 till 4, stuff like that). It seems to work a lot better that way. What's my point here? Just that it's a pretty good darkish d&b album that good to listen to if you're in the right mood - similar to Wormholes in that respect.
