You really out to listen a little more carefully. I can usually tell
when it is a 128 kbs (or worse) MP3 without even being told it is an
MP3 in the first place, without having even ever heard the song before.
It has this characteristic sound. All of the high ends get really soft
sounding... To compare, a CD/Record (even a tape!) is like a new
toothpick with a nice pointy tip. An MP3 is like a toothpick which has
been ground around a bit, so that tip isn't quite there anymore. It is
fuzzy. I can't stand most of the MP3's of my own tracks, and I took my
cd down off of mp3.com, because I couldn't stand the idea of someone
buying redbook converted copies of 128 mp3s of songs that used to sound
good.
Geez, even if you can't tell the difference, we can. Don't sell your
music short of its full sonic potential.
Minidisk seems to be a different story (at least with the ATRAK 6 ones
I've been listening to). I usually can't tell the difference between
minidisk and the orriginal, but sometimes I'll think I can hear a
little more dirt, or a bit of fuzziness in the high end, but it could
just be my paranoid immagination too. Also, these are recorded through
analog lines, not through digi-in, so that could be a cause of error
too.
Hmmm... you don't like records because you are too lazy to get up to
flip it over. I think Steve Albini was right... CD's are just the
rich-man's 8-tracks. Quality... Convenience... <holding one in each
hand> I think I'll take quality, since it is MUSIC we are talking
about, not yardwork.
