OK call me crazy, but I have no problem with 128 MP3s. They sound fine. I am a musician and listen -VERY CAREFULLY- to music, and while I agree they could be a -little tiny bit- better, they are just fine. Vinyl, however, I think sounds like shit. Call me crazy, I know you will, but that annoying static between tracks drives me nuts. Having to get up and flip the tape made me start phasing out all my cassettes, and it's even more of a pain in the ass with vinyl. With MP3s I have hours upon hours of tracks on random play and i never need to leave my chair. Oh, did i mention that they sound just fine? ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

You really out to listen a little more carefully. I can usually tell when it is a 128 kbs (or worse) MP3 without even being told it is an MP3 in the first place, without having even ever heard the song before. It has this characteristic sound. All of the high ends get really soft sounding... To compare, a CD/Record (even a tape!) is like a new toothpick with a nice pointy tip. An MP3 is like a toothpick which has been ground around a bit, so that tip isn't quite there anymore. It is fuzzy. I can't stand most of the MP3's of my own tracks, and I took my cd down off of mp3.com, because I couldn't stand the idea of someone buying redbook converted copies of 128 mp3s of songs that used to sound good. Geez, even if you can't tell the difference, we can. Don't sell your music short of its full sonic potential. Minidisk seems to be a different story (at least with the ATRAK 6 ones I've been listening to). I usually can't tell the difference between minidisk and the orriginal, but sometimes I'll think I can hear a little more dirt, or a bit of fuzziness in the high end, but it could just be my paranoid immagination too. Also, these are recorded through analog lines, not through digi-in, so that could be a cause of error too. Hmmm... you don't like records because you are too lazy to get up to flip it over. I think Steve Albini was right... CD's are just the rich-man's 8-tracks. Quality... Convenience... <holding one in each hand> I think I'll take quality, since it is MUSIC we are talking about, not yardwork. -Andy! --- Rishi Saez <fleshpile@hotmail.com> wrote:

i have been mp3ing my tracks for years, before that i mp2-ed them. personally i dislike the sound of mp3 unless it is way above 128. mp3's really have a problem with complex singles, if a single instrument playing it is more accurate then 10 instruments layered. in one of my tracks the snare drum turned into a trash can. this is all from my perspective because i know what my song sounds like in detail before it gets mp3-ed. even though the sound bothers me, it seems listeners don't care. i have sold 300 of my dam CDs on mp3.com. mp3 is kind of like vhs, most people just aren't audiophiles. http://www.mp3.com/mysticalsun peace -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- m y s t i c a l s u n http://www.mysticalsun.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

man, you people are on crack if you think that compressing sound isn't going to affect the way you hear it. <hears clue phone ringing off the hook> you're dealing with the nouveau cassette tape, get over it. watery distortion is the hiss of the double-oughts. -- http://www.synthesizer.org/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
